Ducks Tournament Run Ends In Semifinals
04/27/18 | Women's Lacrosse
BOULDER, Colo. – The Oregon women's lacrosse team looked to have No. 15 Colorado in check early on in Friday's Pac-12 semifinal match, but the Buffs exploded for 11 goals in the second half to defeat the Ducks 16-6 at Prentup Field.
"Their goalkeeper shut the door on us," said head coach Katrina Dowd. "They were playing really good defense, and it started on our rides, they were shortening our possessions. They are really tough and battle tested."
How it Happened: The Ducks (9-9, 4-6) put on a stellar defensive effort in the first 30 minutes, holding Colorado to five goals.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Read was a huge factor in keeping the Buffs at bay, recording 10 saves in the first half. Junior Shannon Williams closed out the period scoring with less than two minutes to go to pull UO within striking distance, down 5-3 at halftime.
It was a different story in the second half as the Buffaloes came out firing to score five goals in just over five minutes, capped off by a goal from CU's Sophia Castillo, to make it 10-3 at the 24:40 mark.
JoJo Hesketh eventually put a stop to Colorado's run, going on to net two of UO's three goals in the second half.
Senior Mariah Gatti recorded one more goal for the Ducks, but Colorado closed out the game on a 3-0 run to earn the final score of 16-6.
Notable: Reads' season-high 17 saves is one shy of the UO single-game record set by Anna Poponyak in 2009 … Read has now recorded a single-season record 179 saves this year, passing Poponyak's previous record of 167 … Jill Zubillaga finished tied with Hesketh for a team-high two goals … Senior Cambi Cukar extended her single-season assists record to 52 after recording two assists on the day.
Box Score: In uncharacteristic fashion, the Ducks struggled in the circle as Colorado outdrew the Ducks 17-7, 8-1 in the first half … The Buffaloes outshot UO 45-28 in the game … Neither team could break through from eight meters out, going a combined 1-for-13 in free position attempts.
Quotable: Head Coach Katrina Dowd

"We played Syracuse and Towson, which were tough teams. Our record could have been different if we scheduled different, but it gave us a chance to win against conference opponents. We had a really good offensive year, and brought in some big-time transfers. It was a stepping stone to take it to the next level."
