Ducks Fall in Pullman
10/11/19 | Women's Volleyball
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Oregon volleyball team fell short in its fourth straight match against a ranked opponent on Friday night, dropping a four-set contest to No. 24 Washington State, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13, in Bohler Gym.
How it Happened: Washington State (14-3, 3-2 Pac-12) came out swinging in the first set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead and forcing the Ducks into an early timeout. Oregon scored three straight to get within 12-10, but the Cougars responded with a 10-3 run to open up a 22-13 lead before trading points en route to an opening set win.
Oregon (5-9, 1-4 Pac-12) took an 11-8 lead early in the second with a 5-1 run, and the Ducks answered back-to-back WSU points with three in a row to force the Cougars into a timeout. Washington State ripped off four straight to tie the game, 19-19, but Willow Johnson answered with a kill and then added another in a 3-0 run that made it 23-20, Oregon. The Cougars scored two in a row to get within 23-22, but a block by Ronika Stone and a kill by Brooke Nuneviller gave UO a 25-22 win and sent the match to intermission tied at one set apiece.
The Ducks and Cougars went back and forth for the majority of the third set. Oregon used a 3-0 run to take a 15-13 lead, but WSU answered with four points in five rallies to move ahead, 18-17. After a WSU service error made it 20-20, the Cougars reeled off three in a row to take control. Kills by Johnson and Stone got UO within 24-22, but WSU's Jocelyn Urias found the floor to secure the set win and a 2-1 match lead for the Cougars.
Oregon scored the first two points of the fourth set, but Washington State battled back to a 9-6 lead and then used an 11-1 run to break the game open. Oregon went on a 6-2 run, but the surge came too late as the Cougars took the set and the match.
Who Stood Out: Johnson led all players with 16 kills on .306 hitting, and Nuneviller put down 15 kills while racking up 23 digs. Stone finished with 11 kills, Kylie Robinson dished out 35 assists and libero Georgia Murphy recorded 18 total digs.
Notable: Nuneviller recorded her team-leading ninth double-double and surpassed 20 digs for the second time this year, but the all-American sophomore left the match late in the fourth set with an apparent injury … Nuneviller, Stone, Robinson and Bea Wetton each had a service ace … WSU beat Oregon for just the second time in the last 25 meetings.
Up Next: The Ducks will fly to Seattle to take on No. 11 Washington on Sunday at 2 p.m (Pac-12 Networks).
