
Relay Gold to Cap World Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Former Oregon track and field standouts Phyllis Francis and Cravon Gillespie each won gold medals over the final two days of the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha. With her effort in the 4x400-meter relay, Francis is now a three-time world champion dating back to her two gold medals from 2017.

Francis ran the opening leg of the United States' victorious relay, and has now been part of the last two world relay teams. She teamed with Sydney McLaughlin, Dalilah Muhammad and Wadeline Jonathas to post a winning time of 3:18.92, the fastest by an American team since 2012. Team USA won by nearly three seconds; Poland (3:21.89) was the runner-up.
On Saturday, the United States won gold in the men's 4x100-meter relay—setting an American record in the process. For his work in the semifinals, Gillespie earned a gold medal of his own. The 2019 NCAA runner-up at 100 and 200 meters ran the anchor leg in the heats to help Team USA qualify for the finals.
The final day of competition also featured Matthew Centrowitz in the final of the 1,500 meters. He was the top American in the race and finished eighth in 3:32.81, a season-best time.
