Gritty Charlton Advances to ITA Main Draw
10/08/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – With two wins Tuesday, sophomore Joshua Charlton is into the main draw of the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla. Charlton beat No. 91 Boris Kozlov of LSU in three, hard-fought sets in the final round of qualifying. Charlton won three singles matches over the past two days of qualifying.
The draw will be released later Tuesday at the completion of the qualifying rounds. The 2019 ITA All-American is being played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.
"Josh showed great grit and determination in both matches today," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "I'm very proud of how he's competed and excited to see him keep playing this week."
Down 5-4 in the opening set, Charlton rattled off three-consecutive games—including two breaks—to take the 1-0 match lead. Kozlov erased a 3-0 deficit in the second to even the match and force a decisive set. With the third tied at 4-all, Charlton held his serve and then broke Kozlov in the next game to move on.
In his first of two matches Tuesday, the Aussie had a 7-5, 6-4 win over Pac-12 foe and 118th-ranked Tim Ruehl of Arizona State to advance.
Charlton opened qualifying Monday with a three-set win over Texas' Siem Woldeab. Charlton dropped the first set in a tiebreaker before rallying for the 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-4 victory. In his last outing, Woldeab beat three top-40 players on his way to winning the Gamecock Fall Invitational.
Charlton and Ty Gentry had a win Monday in the first round of the doubles qualifying draw. The Ducks' duo came away with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sean Hill and Matheus Leite of BYU. In the next round, however, Charlton and Gentry dropped their match against Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard of North Carolina.
