Valiant Effort Ends In Frustration

The Oregon volleyball team had match point twice but couldn't finish off Arizona State in a five-set loss Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon rallied back from being swept Friday to engage in a spirited five-set match Sunday against Arizona State, which fought off two UO match points before rallying to win, 25-19, 27-25, 27-25, 25-22, 18-16.
The Ducks (7-18, 3-13 Pac-12) outhit Arizona State in the deciding set, .143 to .059. But Oregon had four service errors in the fifth, including three of ASU's first five points in the set.
"Just kind of a microcosm of our season, I feel like; just more of the same," UO coach Matt Ulmer said. "I thought we played well in stretches, did a lot of good things. We played well enough to be victorious, and we weren't. Just very frustrating."
How It Happened: The first set seemed like a continuation of Friday's loss to Arizona, in which the Ducks allowed several mid-set runs that cost them dearly. In this case, ASU ripped off six in a row to take an 11-6 lead. Oregon dug deep and was able to tie the set 17-17, and a kill by Taylor Williams fended off one set point, but the Sun Devils ultimately took the early lead.
Oregon's floor coverage was better after the first set, the result of a schematic adjustment Ulmer said the UO staff implemented. Nuneviller had kills on three out of four points to help the Ducks to an early lead, 5-3. Arizona State rallied again a couple of times, from down 8-6 to up 12-9, and then again with three points to lead 17-13. But Oregon's resiliency paid off this time. Stone ended a long rally to fend off one set point and get the Ducks within 24-23, and Nuneviller found the floor to tie it. A block by Stone fended off yet another set point to tie the score again 25-25, and two points later Oregon's senior leader knotted the match at one set apiece with a kill.
The Ducks had another early edge in set three. Williams put them up 7-4 with a kill, and Bea Wetton made it 11-7 with one of her three aces on the day. ASU scored five in a row to go up 18-13, but the Ducks fought back and another ace by Wetton tied it, 21-21. Karson Bacon blasted a kill that an ASU player couldn't handle to make it 23-22, and Nuneviller spiked an overpass to the floor to set up set point. ASU fought off two set points and tied it 25-25, but Stone again had a set-deciding kill, and the Ducks led 2-1.

Arizona State led for much of the fourth, scoring three straight to go up 6-3, and going up four at 15-11 when an attack by Stone was blocked. Oregon was down 22-16 before rallying within three, helped by two Georgia Murphy aces. Kills by Willow Johnson and Stone fought off two set points, but ASU eventually evened the match.
The fifth set began with Oregon playing well overall, but three UO service errors contributed to ASU being in a 5-5 tie. Neither team led by a point the rest of the way, until the Sun Devils eventually won the set and the match. The Ducks had a chance to set up match point when the set was tied, 13-13, but yet another service error kept ASU alive.
"They were careless service errors, and it gave them a chance, where they felt like they could do it," Ulmer said. "We did so many things, but you don't give yourself a chance to be successful. It's frustrating."
A kill by Bacon tied the match again at 14-14, and she teamed with Nuneviller on a block for a 15-14 lead. Bacon and Johnson teamed on another block to put the Ducks up 16-15, their last lead of the match.
"That's really important for us, and for her," Ulmer said of Bacon's play down the stretch. "She's becoming a big-time player."
Who Stood Out: Stone had 20 kills on 49 attacks and hit .265, and added four blocks. Johnson had 14 kills with 16 digs, and the Ducks also got double-doubles from Nuneviller (12 kills, 18 digs) and Elise Ferreira (58 assists, 18 digs). Bacon was a force at the net with 12 kills and seven blocks, and Williams had an encouraging night with nine kills. Ferreira handled setting duties in a 5-1 rotation over the final four sets, after Kylie Robinson experienced a recurrence of concussion symptoms in the first set.
Up Next: The Ducks go on the road for three matches, beginning at UCLA on Friday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
