PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – No. 11 Oregon rallied from a 17-point first half deficit to force overtime but fell to No. 8 Gonzaga 73-72 Thursday in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis at the Imperial Arena.
The Ducks will now face No. 6 North Carolina in the consolation final Friday at 8:30 a.m. Pacific time.
How it Happened: The Ducks tied the game at 48-48 as Francis Okoro's rebound basket with 13:41 to go capped an 11-5 run. Oregon then took its first lead of the game, 51-50, on Payton Pritchard's three-pointer with 11:51 remaining.
From there Gonzaga and the Ducks traded points for the next 12 minutes, until the Bulldogs went up by five, 66-61, with 1:15 left in regulation. Oregon responded with a three-pointer by Pritchard to pull within two, and then Chris Duarte sank a pair of free throws with :07 remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 66-66.
In the extra period, the Ducks built a four-point lead, 70-66, on Shakur Juiston's lay-in with 3:35 to play, but Gonzaga eventually tied it at 72-72, and then took the lead on a free throw by Drew Timme with :20 remaining. Pritchard's 10-foot jumper on Oregon's last possession went in-and-out to give the Bulldogs the win.
The Ducks started the game out cold, making three of their first 10 field goal attempts as Gonzaga built a 24-7 lead with 12:38 left in the first half. The Ducks then went on a 21-7 run to cut the Bulldogs' lead to three, 31-28, with 6:15 remaining. Pritchard and C.J. Walker each had five points during that run.
The Bulldogs led 43-37 at the half.
Who Stood Out: Pritchard led Oregon with 17 points. Duarte had 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Walker had his second straight season high with 12 points.
Notable: Friday's game will be a rematch of the 2017 Final Four game between UNC and Oregon. The Tar Heels won that game 77-76 and went on to win the national championship. …This was the first meeting between the Ducks and Bulldogs since the 1999-00 season, when Oregon defeated Gonzaga 70-64 in the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii. … The win ended Oregon's winning streak that dated back to 1933 in the series at 15 in a row.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman:
"I do like the way the guys battled back after a terrible start. We just dug ourselves a hole there. They were able to battle back in both games."
