Defense Spurs Weekend Sweep By UO Men
02/10/19 | Men's Basketball
The Ducks held Stanford to 46 points on 27.3 percent shooting Sunday to complete a sweep of the Bay Area schools at home and surpass .500 in Pac-12 play.
EUGENE, Ore. — Payton Pritchard scored 20 points for the second time this week and Kenny Wooten tied his career-high with seven blocked shots to lead a stout defensive effort by Oregon in a 69-46 victory Sunday over Stanford before 9,014 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (15-9, 6-5 Pac-12) allowed their lowest point total of the season and held the Cardinal to 27.3 percent shooting, worst by a UO opponent in Pac-12 play this season. Stanford (12-11, 5-6) missed its first 13 shots during a seven-minute scoreless stretch to open the game, allowing the Ducks to sweep a weekend in conference play for the first time in 2019.
"We've been trying to get a sweep from day one," said sophomore Victor Bailey Jr., who hit a trio of three-pointers. "That's the goal when you go out there. We were just able to execute and get that done this week."

How It Happened: Wooten blocked a shot on the game's opening possession, another just over a minute later and yet another on Stanford's seventh possession. The third put the Cardinal in an 0-of-11 shooting hole to open the game, with Stanford not scoring a point until the 13:00 mark of the first half.
"I know they wanted to penetrate, and I feel like after a couple of blocks they started looking for another way to score," Wooten said.
Oregon didn't take great advantage of that early cold spell for the Cardinal, going up just 6-0 before Stanford scored. But after that initial basket for the visitors, the UO defense put together another scoreless stretch of 6:31, during which the Ducks jumped out to a 16-2 lead. Miles Norris and Bailey hit three-pointers to cap that 10-0 run by Oregon.
A midrange jumper for Bailey put the Ducks up 14 for the first time at 18-4, and the teams traded baskets until — with Wooten on the bench due to two fouls — Stanford closed the gap a bit to trail 30-20 at halftime.

"Kenny set an unbelievable tone that first 10 minutes," UO coach Dana Altman said. "Just made them a little hesitant offensively. He really, really was active, and really in great position."
Pritchard opened the scoring for Oregon in the second half with a reverse layup; he later scored in the paint on three straight possession to keep the Cardinal at arm's length, before knocking down a three-pointer for a 46-31 lead. The three-pointer was one of just two Pritchard hit on the night; four days after making a season-high five three-pointers, Pritchard tied his season-high for two-point baskets Sunday with six.
"He was really good tonight," Altman said. "Straight line drives, got to the rim, finished some tough shots. I thought he did a good job."

Louis King and Pritchard scored on back-to-back possessions later in the second half for a 60-39 lead, and King gave the Ducks their biggest lead of the night with a pullup jumper that made it 69-43. The Ducks continued their pressure at both ends until the final buzzer, improving their record in Pac-12 play to above .500 for the first time this season.
Who Stood Out: Pritchard made 8-of-13 attempts for his 20 points, and King added 16 points with a team-high seven rebounds and three steals. Wooten had six rebounds and six points plus the seven blocked shots, and Bailey added 11 points.
What It Means: By completing their first weekend sweep in Pac-12 play and reaching 6-5 in the conference, the Ducks moved within a game of second place with four weeks to go in the regular season. They'll now need to pass some road tests, as five of the last seven Pac-12 games will be played away from Eugene.
"We're going to find out how together of a team we have," Altman said. "The schedule kind of shifts against us. But the best thing is, we're probably as healthy as we've been in a long time."

Notable: The Cardinal played without sophomore guard Daejon Davis, their second-leading scorer, who suffered an injury Thursday at Oregon State. … Oregon's previous season-low for points allowed was 47 against Eastern Washington, and the previous low against a Pac-12 opponent was 54 at Arizona. … Eastern Washington shot 23.1 percent back in early November, the lowest shooting percentage allowed by the Ducks this season.
Up Next: The Ducks look to even the score in this year's Civil War series when they play at Oregon State on Saturday (7:30 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
