Ducks Turn in Top-Five Finish Against Elite Field
02/20/19 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon came in fifth at The Prestige Presented by Charles Schwab against another tough field, finishing the event 17 over Wednesday at the PGA West Greg Norman Course. The Ducks shot 11 over in the final round, while Ryan Gronlund led the way with a 10th-place finish at even par for the week.
Oregon finished ahead of four teams that were ranked in the latest Golfstat rankings. The Ducks bested No. 25 Arkansas, No. 35 Northwestern, No. 39 Stanford and No. 46 Iowa State, marking the second straight event that Oregon played well against stiff competition.
How it Happened: Edwin Yi got off to a hot start with birdies at three of his first five holes to get to 2 under for the tournament. However, he double bogeyed the par-3 seventh and was 1 under as he made the turn. He birdied 11 but made another double bogey at the par-3 13th to drop back to even on the round. A birdie at the par-5 16th got him back into red numbers before dropping a shot at the last to finish the tournament tied for 11th.
Gronlund had a fairly consistent final round with the exception of a pair of double bogeys, shooting a 2-over 73. He started his day with six straight pars but made double at seven before bouncing back with a birdie at eight. Gronlund got back to even with a birdie at 11, but gave a pair back with a double bogey at 13.
Kevin Geniza turned in a steady round of 1-over 72 to finish in tied for 24th at 6 over for the week. He opened with four straight pars and made a bogey at five and a birdie at the par-5 eighth to shoot even going out. Geniza birdied the par-5 12th to get to 1 under but bogeyed holes 15 and 16 to drop back over par.
No. 16 LSU took home the team title at 14 under while Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland won the individual title at 8 under.
