Tellache Wraps Up Win
03/01/19 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Nico Tellache retired all four hitters he faced to get the save in a 4-3 Oregon win over Loyola Marymount in game one of a three-game series on Friday at PK Park.
How it Happened: Oregon led 4-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning, but Loyola Marymount rallied scoring a pair of runs on a Tevin Esquerra two-run homer with no outs.
One out after the home run, Alex Lambeau and Ryan Kawano reached on back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a ground out.
With the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second, Tellache entered the game and fanned Nick Sogard to end the Lions' threat. Tellache pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out the first two hitters, to record his first career save.
Oregon (5-2) drew first blood scoring a run in the second inning on a Taylor Adams squeeze bunt. Gabe Matthews scored after leading off the inning with a base hit, moving to second on a Jakob Goldfarb walk and to third when Aaron Zavala reached on a fielder's choice.
Loyola Marymount (5-4) tied the game in the fop of the fourth on a Sogard RBI single, but the Ducks answered with three runs in the top of the sixth. Spencer Steer, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch to give the Ducks the lead. Cameron Campbell followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Matthews, who walked earlier in the inning. Goldfarb, who reached on a base hit, also scored on a wild pitch to put UO ahead 4-1.

On finishing after a tough eight inning...
"When you give them the momentum like that, you are usually set out for a really tough ninth. Ninco said 'no, I'll take care of this.' That was pretty special."
On the closer role...
"Brett Walker has been good for us. I'm sure if the same situation arises tomorrow he will get the ball. That's probably the silver lining; we didn't have to go into an extra inning. Nico Tellache obviously came to the rescue. That was spectacular."
On the bullpen as a whole...
"We've got a top few now. Brett Walker and Nico Tellache are part of that. Christian Ciuffetelli is part of that. Robert Ahlstrom, we like him in that long role and he did a tremendous job today. Each and every outing we are watching very close. There are some jobs to be had and they know it. We know it. We'd like to shore that up with some consistency. I'm sure they would too."
Box Score Notes: Oregon starter Cullen Kafka tied a career high with seven strikeouts in five innings pitched … He gave up just one run on four hits while walking four and hitting a batter … Steer and Matthews had two hits apiece, and combined for four of Oregon's seven hits … Freshman Sam Novitske walked twice to run his consecutive games reaching base streak to seven … Oregon stranded 11 runners while Loyola Marymount left 10 on base … Oregon hitters drew a season-high 10 walks … Oregon hitters fanned a season-high 13 hitters … Oregon was out-hit by its opponent for the first time tonight.
Notable: Tellache's three strikeouts matched a career high, which he accomplished twice in 2018 … Novtiske, Steer and Tanner Smith have all reached base safely in all seven games … Oregon pitching has 25 strikeouts in the last two games, the most in a two-game stretch by the Ducks since April 28-29, 2017 vs. Arizona State … The Ducks' 36 strikeouts in the last three games are the most over such a stretch since Apr. 23-29 vs. Stanford and Arizona State … Included in both those stretches was David Peterson's 20-strikeout game against Arizona State on Apr. 28, 2017.
On Deck: Oregon and LMU will play game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m. at PK Park. Junior Cole Stringer (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will take the mound for Oregon, while junior Josh Agnew (1-0, 1.00) will throw for the Lions.
