Ducks lose lead late at BYU

Provo, Utah – BYU scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 7-3 win over Oregon on Tuesday in a nonconference game at Larry M. Miller Park.
How it Happened: The Ducks (12-10) took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning but a pair of controversial calls helped lead to a five-run inning for the Cougars (18-5).
Robert Ahlstrom (3-3) came in relief in the eighth and got pinch hitter DJ McNew to strike out to open the inning. Brock Hale, the next hitter, was ruled safe at first on a ground ball to Sam Novitske by the first base umpire, with replays showing Hale out on the play. The next batter was ruled to be hit by pitch, with replays appearing to show the ball hitting the nub of the bat, to put runners at first and second with one out.
BYU took advantage of the breaks after Ahlstrom got Austin Denning to fly out to right field for the second out of the inning before leaving the game. The Cougars got four straight hits off Ducks' reliever Niko Tellache to plate the five runs.
Oregon took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Tanner Smith RBI double into the left-field corner that scored Aaron Zavala.
BYU tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the inning but the Ducks rallied for runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
Spencer Steer, who singled to lead off the inning, scored when Cameron Campbell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth.
Gabe Matthews drove in Jonny DeLuca with an RBI double in the fifth. DeLuca reached on a walk and moved to second on a Steer walk.
The Ducks had opportunities to add runs. Matthews was thrown out at home in the second inning trying to score from first on a Zavala double. Oregon also stranded five runners, four in scoring position, in the fourth and fifth innings. The Ducks left the bases loaded in the fourth, and had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth but could not get the runs home.
Box Score Notes: Matthews went 2-for-4 with a RBI … The two hits marked his second straight game with multiple hits and his team-best ninth multi-hit game this season … Novitske (the leadoff batter) reached base twice, on a hit and base on balls … He has reached base multiple times in 19 of Oregon's 22 games … DeLuca walked twice in the game … He has drawn six walks in Oregon's last three games after walking just three times in the team's first 19 games … Freshman Tyler Frazier made his first career start on the mound for the Ducks … He left the game with a 3-1 lead, allowing an earned run on just four hits in 4.2 innings with a career-best six strikeouts.
On Deck: Oregon continues a five-game road trip in the state of Utah on Wednesday with a game at Utah Valley.
