Down Goes No. 1! Ducks Hand UCLA First Pac-12 Loss
04/12/19 | Softball
Dail struck out 12 in a masterful performance against the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation, and the Ducks (17-19, 2-8 Pac-12) took the lead in the sixth on a clutch two-run home run by April Utecht before adding an important insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run from Rachel Cid. It was just the second loss all season for the Bruins (35-2, 9-1 Pac-12), snapping a 19-game winning streak.
How it Happened: Dail and UCLA starter Megan Faraimo were both in control early on, with Dail fanning six batters through the first three innings and Faraimo striking out five.Straight. Filth.

The Bruins scored the game's first run in the fourth as a leadoff double came around to score on a sacrifice fly, but freshman Hannah Galey made a great throw from right field on the play to get the runner trying to take third to end the inning and prevent further damage. UCLA added one more in the fifth on a hit-by-pitch and a pair of singles to take a 2-0 lead.
After recording just two hits off Faraimo through the first five frames, the Ducks' offense got rolling in the sixth. Haley Cruse laid down a perfect bunt for a one-out single, and freshman Jasmine Sievers put Oregon on the board with a screaming line drive down the left-field line for a two-out RBI double.
Utecht stepped to the plate next, and the senior crushed a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left-center field to give Oregon a 3-2 lead.
Dail went back to work in the sixth, striking out the side in order to send the Ducks to the seventh with the lead. Cid wasted no time getting her pitcher a vital insurance run, blasting the first pitch of the inning to the opposite field for a solo home run to make it 4-2.
Cruse made a great leaping catch at the wall in center field to get the first out in the bottom of the seventh, and Dail got a fly ball to Cherish Burks in left for out No. 2. UCLA cut Oregon's lead to 4-3 on a two-out solo home run and then put the tying run on in scoring position via a single and an error, but Dail struck out reigning Pac-12 freshman of the year Aaliyah Jordan for the fourth time to secure the upset victory for the Ducks.NO QUIT. At the Plate: Utecht drove in two with her clutch home run in the sixth and Cid finished 1-for-3 with her solo home run, keeping the two Ducks tied for the team lead with eight blasts each. Sievers was 1-for-3 with her RBI double, and Cruse, Burks and Bunker each recorded singles.
In the Circle: Dail improved to 14-8 on the season with a terrific performance against one of the nation's top offenses, finishing one strikeout shy of her career-high with 12. The reigning Pac-12 pitcher of the week is now 5-0 in her last seven starts with a 2.26 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 43.1 innings pitched.
Notable: Utecht has now hit go-ahead home runs this season against No. 8 LSU, No. 3 Florida, No. 7 Washington and No. 1 UCLA … Utecht extended her team lead with her eighth multi-RBI game … The Ducks won for the second time this season when trailing after five innings … Oregon has now won three straight against UCLA, dating back to last season.
Up Next: Oregon will go for the series win over the No. 1 Bruins in game two on Saturday night (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
