Stretch Run Begins With Shutout Win
04/18/19 | Softball
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Dail struck out 11 and Jasmine Sievers had an RBI double in the fifth for the Oregon softball team Thursday.
Jordan Dail pitched herself into trouble at times Thursday, but in every instance, she pitched herself right back out of trouble.
Dail struck out 11 batters in Oregon's series opener against Cal at Jane Sanders Stadium, 10 of them with a runner in scoring position as the Ducks beat the Golden Bears, 1-0. Dail kept the Bears at bay long enough for Jasmine Sievers to drive in Allee Bunker with a fifth-inning double, delivering the Ducks' third win in conference play this season.
"I was kind of out of the zone a little bit," said Dail (15-10), who surrendered three hits and three walks. "I was just fortunate enough that when they did get on base, I was able to lock in and get out of it."

How It Happened: Playing for just the seventh time this season at home, Oregon (18-21, 3-10 Pac-12) fed off its crowd to deliver in big situations all night. Dail walked the first batter of the game and saw her sacrificed to second, but wriggled out of the jam. She struck out the side after allowing a leadoff double in the second, and also struck out three straight after the first two runners reached in the fourth.
"I think she was just a little amped up, being back at home and being in front of our fans — who were unbelievable tonight," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "We have the best fans in the country, and to hear 'The Jane' roar for these guys was exciting."
The Ducks loaded the bases in the second, but a scorching line drive off the bat of Haley Cruse was snared by Cal pitcher Kamalani Dung to end the inning. Oregon finally broke through in the fifth, when Bunker reached on a fielder's choice and Sievers smoked a double to left center.
"(Dung) got me out the first two times, but I had some good at-bats off her," Sievers said. "I was locked in, and I wasn't going to let her beat me a third time."

A leadoff walk threatened Dail's shutout bid again in the sixth, but she struck out two with a runner on second. Dail played with fire one more time in the seventh, allowing back-to-back singles to open the inning. But she got Cal's leadoff hitter to pop out to third base on a bunt attempt, coaxed a line out to third for the second out, and ended the game with her 11th strikeout.
"I think I was (jumping) 10 feet in the air when she was striking people out," said Sievers, the UO shortstop. "I love it. I know our fans are pumped up we're at home, and you could feel it tonight. That helps us."
At the Plate: Sievers' double was the fourth and final hit of the game for the Ducks. Bunker singled in the second, Shaye Bowden led off the fourth with a hit before being stranded, and Cruse singled in the fifth before being forced out on the fielder's choice by Bunker. The bases-loaded situation in the second came without a hit, as Rachel Cid, Cherish Burks and Hannah Galey worked three straight walks.
In the Circle: Dail threw her third seven-inning shutout of the season. Of her 11 strikeouts, 10 came with a runner in scoring position.
Notable: Dail is now only nine strikeouts away from 200 this season and 13 shy of cracking the UO single-season top 10. … Six of Sievers' team-best 11 doubles have come in the last 12 games. … Bunker has now hit safely in 10 of Oregon's last 11 games and is batting .471 (16-for-34) during that stretch. … Cruse is batting .429 (15-for-35) in the last 11 games since returning to the leadoff spot. … The fifth inning continued to be a big one for the Ducks; UO has outscored its opponents 41-23 in the fifth frame this season/ … Oregon has now won eight straight against Cal and 16 of the last 17.
Up Next: The Ducks and Golden Bears face off again Friday (7 p.m., Pac-12).
