The Oregon lacrosse team was pleased with its work ethic and competitiveness Friday, which helped the Ducks rally in the second half before falling to defending conference champ Colorado.
EUGENE, Ore. — Playing in difficult conditions against an outstanding opponent, the Oregon lacrosse team rallied within a goal of Colorado midway through the second half Friday before dropping the regular-season finale, 14-8, before 182 fans at a rainy Papé Field.
The Ducks (3-14, 1-9 Pac-12) trailed 7-4 at the half but fought back within 8-7 when Jamie Level scored her 22nd goal of the season with 20:16 left in the second half. Colorado (9-6, 8-2) scored the next four goals in the game, however, handing the UO women a loss in their final game before the Pac-12 Tournament starts at Papé Field on Thursday.
"I think we've turned a corner in really understanding how we need to work, and the overall commitment we need to make towards each other all over the field," first-year UO coach Chelsea Gamble said. "I think we're getting to a place where they know they can compete with teams. Now it's about finishing."
How It Happened: Level scored her first of two goals in the game at the 23:53 mark of the first half, tying the score, 1-1. Lillian Stump scored the first of her five goals on the night six minutes later for a 2-2 tie, and Shannon Williams scored off a Stump assist with 8:00 left in the half to cut Colorado's lead to 4-3.
The Buffaloes ran off three in a row before halftime, though, one of two decisive runs they had in the game, one in each half. Stump scored twice on Williams assists just after halftime to help the Ducks rally within one at 8-7, but the second Colorado run clinched the game for the visitors.
Who Stood Out: Stump scored five goals in all and added an assist, and Williams had a goal with three assists. Rachel Hall played the full 60 minutes in goal and made 10 saves.
Stump said she and Williams "are really close off the field, and we've been waiting to make that connection on the field. Today we each had full trust in each other, and it ended up working out really well."
Senior Night: Friday's game was the final regular-season home game in the careers of seniors Williams, Madeline Reece, Julia Taylor and Mandi Trostle. They played under three head coaches in their four years, but leave feeling like the program is in good hands under Gamble.
"The culture needs to be built, and I think this is the start of that this year," Williams said. "There's definitely a lot of room to grow and develop, but I'm excited to see how the program takes off after we leave."
Up Next: The Pac-12 Tournament will be played in Eugene on April 25-28.
