Ducks Take Two of Three From Cal
04/20/19 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon softball team came away with its first Pac-12 series win of the season on Saturday, taking two of three from California after splitting a doubleheader at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (19-22, 4-11 Pac-12) clinched the series in the continued game from Friday night to start the twin bill on Saturday, riding sophomore Jordan Dail's second straight complete-game shutout to a 4-0 win. Oregon got off to a slow start in game two and then fell just short in a late comeback attempt as Cal (24-22, 3-14 Pac-12) salvaged the series finale, 5-3.
GAME ONE – Oregon 4, California 0
How it Happened: After play was suspended Friday night due to weather, the Ducks and Golden Bears picked things up at 10 a.m. with Oregon up 1-0 in the top of the second. Allee Bunker gave Oregon the early lead on Friday with an RBI triple down the right-field line to score Haley Cruse, who started things off with a single.
Dail was forced to start her day on Saturday with one out, runners on first and second and a 2-1 count, and the lefty quickly worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
Cruse got the offense going in the third inning with a leadoff solo home run, her first of the year, to left field to extend Oregon's lead to 2-0.
Freshman Hannah Galey helped preserve Dail's shutout in the top of the fourth after Cal put two runners on. The Bears lifted a two-out single to right, and Galey made a perfect one-hop throw to the plate to get the runner trying to score from second and end the inning.
Dail kept the Bears scoreless through six, and the Ducks got her a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half to go up 4-0. Jasmine Sievers made it 3-0 with the Ducks' second home run of the game, blasting a 3-2 pitch to dead center field for her fourth blast of the season. April Utecht followed with a single and pinch-runner Bayley Bruner stole second before coming around to score on a two-out RBI single by Rachel Cid.

Cal threatened in the top of the seventh, getting the first two batters aboard on an infield single and an error. But Dail buckled down and retired the next three batters in order to give Oregon the game and the series with her second straight complete-game shutout.
At the Plate: Cruse finished 2-for-3 with her solo homer and two runs scored to lead the offense. Sievers, Bunker and Cid all finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Utecht, Shaye Bowden and Galey each had a hit.
In the Circle: Dail threw her second complete-game shutout of the series and fifth of the season, striking out six while allowing just six hits and two walks in seven full innings.

GAME TWO – CALIFORNIA 5, OREGON 3
How it Happened: The series finale got off to a tough start for the Ducks as Cal jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead on five hits and a pair of Oregon errors. Cruse made her collegiate pitching debut, taking over for starter Kailey Krueger with runners on the corners and one out after Cal had already pushed four runs across. Cruse pitched to one batter before giving way to Dail, who left the bases loaded to prevent any further damage.

Dail kept the Bears scoreless rest of the way in her third scoreless outing of the weekend, but the Ducks' offense struggled to take advantage early on with runners in scoring position. Oregon got a runner to third in each of the first two innings, put a runner on second in the third and loaded the bases in the fifth, but Cal starter Zoe Conley was able to escape unscathed each time.
The Ducks broke through in the sixth, scoring two runs to cut Cal's lead to 5-2. After a pair of two-out walks, Bunker got Oregon on the board with an RBI single to left field, and Sievers followed with a hot shot down the third-base line for an RBI double to get the Ducks within three. Oregon had two in scoring position and the tying run at the plate, but a groundout ended the inning.
Bowden got the bottom of the seventh inning started with a solo home run to dead center, cutting Cal's lead to 5-3. Rachel Cid followed with a deep fly of her own to center, but it was caught just in front of the wall for the first out. The Ducks were down to their final out when Galey worked a walk and fellow freshman Lexi Wagner followed with a single, putting the tying runs aboard. Cruse hit one hard back up the middle, but Conley was able to glove it and go to first to end the Ducks' comeback bid.
At the Plate: Bunker, Sievers and Bowden all finished with two hits and an RBI, and both Cherish Burks and Wagner added a hit. The Ducks had plenty of opportunities to score, but were just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
In the Circle: Krueger took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, in the first inning. Dail shined again with 6.2 scoreless innings of relief, capping a stellar weekend for the sophomore lefty. Dail did not give up a run in 20.2 innings of work against Cal, racking up 22 total strikeouts. The Forest, Va., native surpassed 200 strikeouts on the season on Saturday and currently has 202, just one shy of cracking the UO single-season top-10 list.

Notable: Bunker continues to swing a scorching hot bat; the freshman is now batting .463 (19-for-41) with a .476 on-base percentage over the Ducks' last 13 games … Cruse has also been hot, hitting .415 (17-for-41) with a .478 OBP in the last 13 games … Sievers leads the team with 12 doubles this season, and seven have come in the last 14 games … Cal snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Ducks, but Oregon has won 17 of the last 19 meetings.
Up Next: Oregon will stay at home to host Portland State in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.
