Ducks Drop Civil War Opener

Oregon lost 8-0 to OSU on Friday and looks to even the series Saturday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon softball team fell behind early and ended up dropping an 8-0 loss to Oregon State in five innings on Friday afternoon before 2,109 fans at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (21-23) struggled to sustain rallies, unable to support left-hander Jordan Dail, who didn't have great command of her usually outstanding arsenal. The Beavers scored in each of the last four innings, handing the Ducks just their second run-rule loss of the season with Dail in the circle.
"Right from the first inning on, you could tell Oregon State was ready to come in here and do what they wanted to do," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "They were confident with it, got it done. They were timely with their hits.
"They played great; we did not play good enough to win today."
How It Happened: Allee Bunker and Jasmine Sievers each reached with one out in the bottom of the first, but the Ducks couldn't capitalize. Oregon State took better advantage in its half of the second, breaking the scoreless tie on a sacrifice fly and making it 3-0 on a two-run double with two out.
The Beavers tacked on two more in the third on a home run that bounced off the top of the center field wall, went up 6-0 in the fourth and made it 8-0 in the fifth on another controversial play, a ground ball down the line that was ruled fair for a two-run double.
Shaye Bowden singled to lead off the fourth and Rachel Cid followed with a walk, but they were left on base. In the bottom of the fifth, with the Ducks needing a run to extend the game, Bunker and Sievers reached again on infield singles, this time with two out, but also were stranded.
At The Plate: The freshman Bunker and Sievers each had two hits, with Bunker extending her hitting streak to nine games. But of the Ducks' six hits, only senior April Utecht's ground ball through the right side in the second inning left the infield.
The Ducks stranded seven runners in the game. "You could start to see us make adjustments; we just made them too late," Lombardi said.
In The Circle: Dail allowed eight runs on eight hits with three walks, striking out two. She fell to 17-11 on the season, with a 3.79 ERA.
Up Next: The Ducks and Beavers meet again at The Jane on Saturday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
