Men of Oregon Advance Four to NCAA Finals
06/05/19 | Track and Field
AUSTIN, Texas – On the opening day of the NCAA Championships, the sixth-ranked Men of Oregon advanced four to an event final. Redshirt senior Cravon Gillespie earned spots in the finals of the 100 and 200 meters and ran a leg on the Ducks' qualifying 4x100-meter relay. With Max Vollmer in the decathlon and Cooper Teare at 5,000 meters, Oregon have six scoring opportunities remaining.
The Women of Oregon will be featured Thursday with 12 of their 15 entries in action. Along with its semifinal heats, the team will have scoring chances in the 10,000 meters, long jump and javelin. The decathlon will also come to a conclusion on day two.
Moving on to finals…

Cravon Gillespie – 200 Meters
Eric Edwards Jr – 110m Hurdles
Spenser Schmidt/Cravon Gillespie/Julius Shellmire/Oraine Palmer – 4x100m
In the Ducks' first event on the track, the 4x100-meter relay team of Schmidt, Gillespie, Shellmire and Palmer got the baton around the track in 38.81 to secure an automatic qualifier into Friday's final. That time represents the team's second fastest of the season, behind the school-record 38.72 from the Pac-12 Championships.
Gillespie returned to the track to pick up individual qualifiers at 100 and 200 meters. Running in heat one of the 100 meters, he stopped the clock in a windy 10.01 (+2.6) to secure his spot in the final. Less than an hour later, Gillespie earned a spot in the 200-meter final. His time of 20.19 from Wednesday's prelim is just off his school mark of 20.17 he set at the conference meet.
Oregon's final individual qualifier of the day was Edwards who moved into the final of the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best performance. He crossed the line in 13.49 to become the fourth hurdler in program history to dip below 13.50 in the event. Edwards was the sixth-fastest overall qualifier.

Making his NCAA debut, Vollmer capped day one of the decathlon with a 48.53 in the 400 meters. He moved from 13th to ninth with the effort and enters Thursday just 26 points shy of the top eight. Day two is set to begin at 11 a.m. (PT) with the 110-meter hurdles.
