EUGENE, Ore. – On day three of the 2019 USA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, current #ProDucks Jasmine Todd and Cole Walsh claimed runner-up finishes in the long jump and pole vault, respectively. Five former UO standouts also advanced, including three—Phyllis Francis, Deajah Stevens and English Gardner—in the women's 200 meters.
Walsh had a final clearance of 5.76m/18-10.75 and was the runner-up to eventual champion and new American-record holder Sam Kendricks. Walsh had a third-attempt clearance at 5.56m/18-3 to stay alive in the competition and went on to take three runs at a would-be personal best before bowing out of the competition.
In her second event of the weekend, Todd was never lower than third place in the field. She opened her series with a 6.66m/21-10.25 but moved up to second with a season-best 6.79m/22-3.5 in her third pass down the runway. Earlier in the week, Todd ran in the first round of the 100 meters.
Francis, the reigning world champion at 400 meters, was the fifth-overall qualifier in Saturday's opening rounds of the 200 meters. She posted a time of 23.05 (-3.1) to win heat two. By were of her world title from 2017, Francis has an automatic bid into the 400-meter field at the World Championships. Gardner was the runner-up in the 100 meters Friday evening.
On the men's side of the 200 meters, Kyree King (20.97, -2.0) was second in his heat to grab a spot into the next round.
Three-time USA champion Devon Allen eased through the line in 13.52 in his opening round of the 110-meter hurdles. He was the fourth-fastest qualifier heading into Sunday's semifinal. Allen is looking to successfully defend his title for the first time in his career. He previously won USA titles in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
In her third race in as many days, Briyahna DesRosiers (52.36) finished seventh in the finals of the 400 meters. It marked her first appearance in the national final. DesRosiers was coming off her senior year at Oregon where she as an NCAA qualifier at 400 meters and an All-American in the 4x100-meter relay.
