EUGENE, Ore. – The 11th ranked Oregon volleyball team improved to 2-0 to start the 2019 season with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 sweep over Boston College on Saturday night in the final match of the Oregon Classic at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks hit .318 as a team and were led once again by returning all-Americans Willow Johnson, Ronika Stone and Brooke Nuneviller. Johnson was named the Oregon Classic MVP after leading all players with 14 kills on .591 hitting.

How it Happened: Boston College (1-2) took an early 9-6 lead to open the match before the Ducks evened things up with a 3-0 run, and Johnson sparked another 3-0 stretch with a kill to give UO a 14-12 lead. The Golden Eagles kept things close, playing to within 22-21, but three straight kills by Stone, Taylor Williams and Karson Bacon sealed the opening-set win for the Ducks.
Stone and Johnson combined for five kills and an ace early in the second as the Ducks jumped out to an 11-3 lead. Oregon led 20-13 when Boston College reeled off seven points in nine rallies to get within 22-20, but once again the Ducks scored three straight points to end the set and take a 2-0 lead into intermission. Johnson was stellar in the set, putting down six kills on eight swings without an error.
Oregon's all-Americans dominated the third and final set to give the Ducks the sweep. Stone racked up seven kills in the set, Johnson put down six and Nuneviller added four as UO raced out to a 16-7 lead and never looked back. The Ducks finished the match on a 5-0 run with Stone, Johnson and Nuneviller putting down kills on four of the final five points.

Who Stood Out: Johnson added 11 digs to notch her second career double-double, and the Oregon Classic MVP finished the weekend with 26 kills and a .581 hitting percentage. Stone hit .417 with 13 kills and Nuneviller added nine kills and 10 digs as both Ducks joined Johnson on the all-tournament team. Setter Kylie Robinson also earned all-tournament honors after impressing once again with 40 assists to go with eight digs, three kills and two aces. Bacon added five kills, and libero Georgia Murphy finished with nine digs.
What it Means: The No. 11 Ducks picked up a pair of home sweeps to open their 2019 season and now will return to practice next week to prepare for a two-week East Coast trip that will begin in Pennsylvania with three matches against a trio of top-15 opponents.

On the opening weekend…
"I thought last night was better than tonight as far as our competitiveness and how tough we were. I thought the focus tonight was just okay and it gave Boston College some opportunities to be successful, and against great teams you just can't do that. It's going to be a learning process, but I think it's great because now we can show those freshmen what it takes night in and night out."
On Johnson's opening weekend…
"Willow and Ronika are just laser focused right now. They really want this to be a great senior year for them and they're doing everything that they can to make that happen. They're ready for this and for Willow, she's really backing it up with her play and she's really leading by example and it's great to see."
Notable: Freshman Morgan Lewis recorded the first two kills of her career and Elise Ferreira dished out her first three assists … The Ducks held the Golden Eagles to just a .120 hitting percentage while totaling four blocks … Oregon is now 2-0 all-time against Boston College after winning the first meeting between the two teams since 1999.
Up Next: Oregon will be back in action on Sept. 11 at No. 12 Pittsburgh before going to University Park to take on No. 3 Minnesota and No. 8 Penn State on Sept. 13-14 in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge.
