Ducks Can’t Hold Off Georgia Tech
01/25/20 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday morning in the opening match of ITA Kickoff Weekend in College Station, Texas. The Ducks led 3-2 after a victory by senior Ty Gentry at No. 3 singles but Georgia Tech tallied wins in the final two matches in play to secure the team win.
How It Happened: Despite a win by Gentry and sophomore Joshua Charlton at No. 1 doubles, Georgia Tech (3-0) took the early 1-0 match lead with victories at two and three. The UO pair collected its 10th win of the season in a 6-1 triumph over Pablo Schelcher and Marcus McDaniel.
Oregon (3-2) pulled even with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win by freshman Jesper Klöv-Nilsson at No. 6 singles. He improves to 10-5 this season and 5-0 in dual play. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead with a victory on court four but Charlton tied the match score at 2-all with a 7-6(3), 6-1 win over Andre Martin at the top of the singles lineup.
With three matches still in play, Gentry put the Ducks ahead with a tough 7-6(3), 7-6(5) win on court three. The UO senior rallied from a 0-3 deficit in the opening frame and then trailed 4-5 in the second-set tiebreak before rattling off the final three points of the match.
However, Georgia Tech had the final answer with wins on courts two and five, respectively. At the No. 2 spot, junior Emmanuel Coste dropped the first set but got an early break in the second in his way to forcing a third frame. With the match tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to court five where freshman Luke Vandecasteele was locked in a three-set battle with Chris Yun. The GT senior came away with the win.
