DMR Smashes NCAA Record in Arkansas
01/31/20 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Highlighted by a collegiate-record performance in the men's distance-medley relay, the Oregon track and field team collected eight top-10 program marks and two wins Friday at the Razorback Invitational. James West, Jacob Miller, Charlie Hunter and Cooper Teare combined for a time of 9:24.52 to take down the 12-year-old NCAA best of 9:25.97 set by Texas in 2008.
West (2:53.53), Miller (47.47), Hunter (1:48.08) and Teare (3:55.45) shaved more than two second off the previous Oregon record, as well, and finished more than 11 seconds ahead of the second-place team in Friday's race. The old UO mark of 9:26.78 was set in 2011 by the team of Mac Fleet, Mike Berry, Elijah Greer and Matthew Centrowitz.
With Friday's showing, Oregon now owns five current NCAA records. Collectively, the Ducks now hold all-time collegiate bests in the women's 60 meters, men's mile, men's and women's distance-medley relays and heptathlon.
For a second-consecutive year, Rhesa Foster won the long jump at the Razorback Invitational. The senior standout got out to a day's best of 6.34m/20-9.75 on her fourth jump of the competition to move from second to first. Based on marks entering the weekend, Foster's jump ranks among the top 10 nationally this season.
Redshirt junior Isaiah Griffith tied the No. 3 mark in Oregon history on his way to a third-place finish in the long jump. On his final pass down the runway, he marked in at 7.79m/25-6.75 for the first 25-foot jump of his indoor career. Fellow junior transfer Kasin Pendergrass Anderson (7.56m/24-9.75) finished the event in fifth place with a personal best of his own.
Freshman Mathilde Rey shined in her collegiate debut with a third-place finish in the pentathlon. Rey posted a personal-best score of 4,142 points, good for the No. 2 mark in program history. She becomes the third Duck in program history to eclipse 4,000 points in the pentathlon, joining the short list that includes school-record holder Brianne Theisen-Eaton and Kalindra McFadden.
The Ducks tallied a pair of top-10 UO marks in the men's weight throw from redshirt seniors Max Lydum and Austin Tharp. Lydum added more than a foot to his PR, posting a day's best of 18.95m/62-2.25 to become the No. 6 performer in program history. Tharp notched the first 60-foot throw of his career to take hold of the No. 10 spot on Oregon's all-time list.
With an indoor-best clearance of 2.16m/7-1, redshirt senior Ben Milligan moved up into a tie for No. 5 on the Oregon top-10 list. He finished in fifth place in the high jump competition.
Through day one of the heptathlon, redshirt freshman Max Vollmer sits in sixth place overall with 3,179 points. He set or tied an indoor personal best in each of the four events Friday. Vollmer finished the day with marks of 7.02 (60 meters), 7.00m/22-11.75 (long jump), 14.36m/47-1.5 (shot put) and 1.93m/6-4 (high jump). The field features four athletes that qualified for last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Up Next: Day two of the Razorback Invitational begins Saturday at 8:40 a.m. (PT) with resumption of the heptathlon—60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters. The meet will be streamed live on SEC Network+ through WatchESPN beginning with the invitational sections of the 400 meters at 11 a.m.
