Ionescu's Triple-Double Sends Ducks To UConn On Seven-Game Win Streak
02/01/20 | Women's Basketball
Sabrina Ionescu filled up the stat sheet Saturday at Colorado, and the Ducks played another strong defensive game to win, 101-53.
BOULDER, Colo. — Two days after stifling defense led to easy baskets in a win at Utah, the No. 3 Oregon women's basketball team used a similar formula Saturday to beat Colorado, 101-53, before 3,669 fans at the CU Events Center.
Sabrina Ionescu recorded her NCAA-record 23rd career triple-double in just three quarters, and the Ducks used their defense and transition offense to break the game open early. After the game, Oregon boarded a charter flight to the East Coast, before playing at No. 4 Connecticut on Monday.
"I was really proud of the team this weekend; we had every reason to look ahead," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "I think our kids are smart enough to know we have UConn on Monday. But we talked to them that these two games were more important than the UConn game, quite frankly, because we want to win a Pac-12 Championship, which puts us in a better position to get a regional that we want."

How It Happened: The Ducks (19-2, 9-1 Pac-12) led by 20 after the first quarter and by 30 at halftime on the way to their seventh straight victory. After Colorado opened the game with a three-pointer, Oregon went on a 21-2 run that began with a three-pointer by Erin Boley and ended on a three-pointer by Ionescu. All five UO starters scored during the run, which put the Ducks up 21-5 midway through the first quarter. Oregon made 8-of-10 shots to close the period, including a jumper by Ionescu just before the buzzer for a 31-11 lead.
Colorado cut the lead to 19 early in the second quarter, but Oregon responded with a 13-2 run to go up by 30. Again, five different players contributed to the run, which included a three-pointer from Minyon Moore and ended with Ionescu driving to the basket. Oregon's lead was 52-22 at halftime, thanks in part to 15 fastbreak points and 14 points off of Colorado's nine turnovers.
"Defensively, we were on point right from the start," Graves said. "And everybody contributed tonight, so we were able to rest a lot of kids, so their bodies aren't taxed too much."

The Ducks didn't lose any momentum during the halftime break. Oregon scored on five straight possessions to open the third quarter, on two baskets that Ionescu scored followed by three she assisted on. She set up Moore for a three-pointer, Sabally for a layup and then Moore again for a layup, putting the Ducks up 64-26. Moments later, more fastbreak points by Taylor Chavez saw her also fouled and make the and-one, putting the UO women up 40 for the first time at 71-31.
Ionescu scored off an assist from Sabally for a 73-31 lead, and on the next possession Ionescu lost her footing but maintained her dribble while lying on the court, and from her knees she fed Chavez for a three-pointer. Later in the period, Ionescu saved a UO miss from going out of bounds for her 10th rebound, securing her triple-double. She left the game on the next possession.
Oregon's lead was 41 entering the fourth quarter, giving Graves the chance to limit his starters' minutes before the Ducks play their third game in five days on Monday at UConn. The final basket of the game put the UO women over the century mark, with Morgan Yaeger rebounding a miss and putting it back.

Who Stood Out: Ionescu finished with 24 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds, making 10-of-14 field-goal attempts. Moore added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Sabally scored 17. Hebard had 10 points with eight rebounds, in the process becoming Oregon's all-time career leader in made field goals, and Boley scored seven points while grabbing five boards.
What It Means: Oregon's trademark the last few years has been offense, and the Ducks entered Saturday as the No. 3 scoring offense in the country at 86.1 points per game. But the Ducks have wreaked havoc on defense the last couple of weeks, and began February playing as well as they have all season.
