Ducks Fall to Defending ASUN Champion Jacksonville
02/14/20 | Women's Lacrosse
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Shonly Wallace recorded her second consecutive hat trick to open the season, but it wasn't enough as Oregon fell to defending ASUN champion Jacksonville, 17-10, on Friday evening.
The Dolphins (1-1) used a 10-2 run over a 33-minute stretch in the middle of the game to hand the Ducks (1-1) their first loss of the season.
Wallace led the Ducks with four goals, backing up her five-goal performance in the season opener last weekend that helped her land the first Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Jacksonville opened up with three consecutive goals to start the game before freshman Hannah Hilcoff put the Ducks on the board just under 10 minutes in. Hilcoff recorded a hat trick in last week's season opener and also scored in the opening 10 minutes of that game.
The JU lead reached 5-1, but a quick 3-0 run by Oregon over a four-minute stretch brought the Ducks within one, 5-4, with 12:23 left in the opening half. Wallace opened the run with a goal from sophomore Jamie Level and the duo hooked up again for a second time at the 13:03 mark. Coming off a five-goal opener, junior Lillian Stump got on the board just 40 seconds after Wallace's second score.
Unfortunately, Oregon was unable to find the back of the net the rest of the first half as the Dolphins scored the only two goals over the final 12 minutes to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
Wallace completed her second consecutive hat trick just 11 seconds into the second half to make it 7-5, but the Ducks would score just one time over the next 20 minutes as JU broke the game wide open. Seven different Dolphins scored during an 8-1 run that ballooned the Jacksonville lead to 15-6.
The youthful Ducks showed a little resilience over the final 10 minutes, outscoring JU 4-2 over that span. Wallace, Stump and Hilcoff scored three consecutive goals during the strong finish.
NOTABLES: JU out-shot Oregon by a 40-28 margin and owned a 17-12 edge in draw controls … Wallace has nine goals over her first two games as a Duck … Wallace has scored on nine of 18 shots this season … Stump's streak of consecutive hat tricks stopped at four … Stump does have multiple goals in six straight games … Stump has 25 goals over her last eight games … Freshman Katie Collins scored her first collegiate goal in the second half ... Hilcoff gathered eight of Oregon's 12 draw controls and already has 11 on the season … Level finished with three points and dished out two assists for the third consecutive game … Alle Dunbar made her second straight start in cage and made seven saves.
UP NEXT: The Ducks close out their two-game Florida road trip with their third straight showdown against an ASUN opponent. Oregon will take on Stetson on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT in the Hatters' season opener.
