Strong Offense Not Enough To Top Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – Despite six different players scoring multiple goals, Oregon couldn't come up with enough defensive stops en route to a tough 18-15 loss at Stetson on Sunday afternoon to close out its two-game Florida road swing.
Oregon scored the first goal of the game but the Hatters responded with a 6-1 run and used a 4-1 spurt over the final 10 minutes of the game that proved to be the difference in the game. The loss drops the Ducks to 1-2, while the game was the season opener for Stetson.
The Ducks out-shot the Hatters 38-30 and owned a 20-15 edge in draw controls thanks in part to a huge game by freshman Hanna Hilcoff. Hilcoff posted team highs of five points, four goals and finished one off the program record with nine draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon broke the slow start for both teams with a goal by junior Lillian Stump just over six minutes into the first half. It marks the seventh consecutive game that Stump found the back of the net.
Following Stump's opening goal, Stetson reeled off a 6-1 run over an eight-minute stretch to take a 6-2 lead with 15:19 left in the half.
Just as quickly as the Hatters took the four-goal lead, the Ducks erased it by scoring six of the next eight goals. Four different players scored during the comeback, highlighted by two goals each for Hilcoff and Stump to complete their first half tricks. Stump tallied the equalizer to tie the game at 8-8.
The last five minutes of the first half went Stetson's way, as the Hatters scored three unanswered goals to take an 11-9 lead at the half.
Oregon fought to within one a few different times in the second half and was able to tie the game at 14-14 with 10:03 remaining. Sophomore Carlie Leach brought the Ducks within one, 14-13, for the third time in the half, but it was sophomore Shonly Wallace's second goal of the frame that tied the game. It was the first time since it was 1-1.
Stetson's final run of the game proved to be the difference, as it scored four of the final five goals of the game. Oregon had a pair of opportunities to take the lead when it was 14-14, but Stetson goalie Kiera McCarthy was able to come up with back-to-back saves.
Sophomore Jamie Level brought Oregon within one, 16-15, but McCarthy struck again with another save to keep the Ducks from tying things up. Stetson's Marina Rotella scored her sixth goal of the game to give the Hatter's a 17-15 lead with 2:33 to go. The Hatters won the ensuing draw control and wound the clock down before scoring the final goal.
NOTABLES: Seven of Hilcoff's nine draw controls came in the first half … Hilcoff finished the two-game road swing in her home state with a combined six goals and 17 draw controls … It marked Hilcoff's second hat trick of the season … The hat trick was also the second of the season for Stump who has 28 goals in her last nine contests … Junior Jen Lanuza scored her first two goals of the season.
UP NEXT: Oregon will look for its first road win when it heads to No. 10 Denver on Friday, Feb. 21. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
