Zavala clutch hit leads Oregon to 3-2 win over Nevada
02/22/20 | Baseball
Eugene, Ore. – Aaron Zavala drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a sixth inning double to propel Oregon to a 3-2 win over Nevada in game two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at PK Park.
How it Happened: The sixth-inning rally started when Kenyon Yovan reached on an error on a dropped pop fly to the second baseman before Gabe Matthews walked. With two outs, Zavala delivered with a line drive into the left-center field gap that rolled to the wall and allowed Yovan and Matthews to score.
The one-run lead is all the Ducks' bullpen would need. Junior Brett Walker, who came in to start the sixth inning in relief of Peyton Fuller, pitched two scoreless innings. He gave way to senior Nico Tellache who fanned two in a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Junior Hunter Breault finished Nevada off with a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first career save. Breault, who made his third appearance of the season, has not allowed a run in 5.1 innings while surrendering just one hit.
The Wolf Pack struck first in the second inning. Wyatt Tilley picked up a pair of RBI on a double to right field to put Nevada (0-5) ahead 2-0.
The Ducks answered with a run in the fourth inning. Freshman Anthony Hall singled to right field to drive in Matthews, who reached on a one-out double, to cut the lead to 2-1.
Box Score Notes: Matthews' double was the 36th of his career moving him into a tie for fourth all-time with Spencer Steer (2017-19) … Tellache made his 61st career appearance him into a tie for ninth all-time with Brac Warren (2015-17) … Zavala was 2-for-3 with two RBI … Hall went 1-for-3 with an RBI … Matthews scored two runs … Peyton Fuller made his second career start and tossed a career-high five innings, tying a career best with four strikeouts. .
On deck: Oregon will look for the series sweep against Nevada on Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior Robert Ahlstrom (0-0, 6.35) will start for the Ducks, while Nevada will throw Shane O'Malley (0-0, 3.60).

On his timely hits:
"This is a pretty cliche process, just going up there and doing your own thing and doing what you can for the team. Just finding a pitch I could drive and get the job done. I wasn't looking for anything specific, but I was able to get a pitch that I could handle and get the job done."
Head Coach Mark Wasikowski
On Oregon's pitching:
"I like the fact that we played hard. I like the fact that we won. I really like the way the pitchers threw the ball. That's three good outings in a row for Hunter Breault in a Duck uniform. For him to have three good outings in a row speaks volumes to the development of Coach (Jake) Angier and him."
