Ranked Matchup Is All Ducks

The No. 3 Oregon women's basketball team beat No. 12 Arizona on Friday night, 85-52, helped by another Sabrina Ionescu triple-double.
EUGENE, Ore. — A showdown between ranked teams turned one-sided before halftime Friday, as the No. 3 Oregon women's basketball team beat No. 12 Arizona, 85-52, helped by senior Sabrina Ionescu's 24th career triple-double.
The Wildcats closed within two points midway through the second quarter, but Oregon scored the final 10 points of the period capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Satou Sabally. That gave the Ducks a 39-22 lead at halftime, and they were never threatened over the final 20 minutes.
Early in the fourth quarter, Ionescu fed fellow senior Ruthy Hebard for consecutive UO baskets that gave Ionescu her NCAA-record 24th triple-double. That total matched the uniform number of former Lakers great Kobe Bryant, a personal friend of Ionescu's whose signature shoes she was wearing along with the rest of the Ducks on Friday.
"Definitely a little bit more emotional for this one," Ionescu said in her postgame interview. "I'd probably be receiving a text at this time with him telling me something, congratulating me and keeping up with it. But he's sending me a text in a different way. I definitely can hear him congratulating me and our team. I hope I can just stay at 24 for the rest of the year, but I don't know if that's gonna happen."

How It Happened: Arizona opened the game with a three-pointer, but the Ducks scored the next 11 points, including two baskets by Hebard plus three-pointers from Ionescu and Sabally. The first quarter ended with a three-pointer and a layin by Taylor Chavez, who bounced back from a scoreless night in Monday's win at UConn by finishing with 17 points Friday.
"Just trying to find where I could fit in," Chavez said. "They find me in the corners, and off the penetration-and-kick. Just trying to knock them down."

Ionescu scored to open the second quarter, giving Oregon a 20-10 lead. Arizona answered with an 8-0 run, including the first points of the night by the Pac-12's leading scorer, Aari McDonald, more than 12 minutes into the game. McDonald had missed her first five shots, and finished with 13 points — seven below her average — with seven turnovers against six assists.
That run got the Wildcats within 20-18, but the Ducks got a basket each from Chavez, Ionescu and Hebard to restore order. After a steal-and-layin by Chavez put Oregon up 33-22, Ionescu got two offensive rebounds on the same possession before finishing it off herself with a three-pointer, and Sabally beat the halftime buzzer with another three.

Oregon's offensive stagnancy early in the second quarter was not an issue in the third; the Ducks went 6-of-6 to open the second half, the first four in a row from Hebard. A three-pointer by Erin Boley made it 51-26, and after Arizona scored on its next possession, the Ducks scored eight straight capped by another Boley three.
Oregon then scored on its last five possessions of the quarter, on baskets by Chavez and Ionescu; consecutive three-pointers by Chavez; and finally a deep, off-balance three to beat the buzzer by Ionescu that brought the crowd to its feet and had even Ionescu shaking her head at the improbability of the shot. That made it 72-38, and the fourth quarter was academic, though Arizona's McDonald did score seven points to secure her 59th straight game reaching double figures.

"That was the 12th-ranked team," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "This was the hottest team in the conference, along with us. And we took it to them."
Who Stood Out: Ionescu finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, making 6-of-9 field-goal attempts. Hebard had 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting, and Sabally flirted with a triple-double of her own before finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Chavez had 17 points plus two of Oregon's 11 steals; Jaz Shelley had three steals to lead the Ducks.

What It Means: The Ducks could have suffered a letdown Friday, coming off a big series of road games that included wins at Oregon State and Connecticut. They could have overlooked Arizona while plotting revenge Sunday against Arizona State, the only team to beat Oregon in conference play this season. But the UO women stayed focused and took care of business, blowing out the No. 12 team in the country.
