Ducks Close Strong in Hawaii
02/08/20 | Men's Golf
WAIKOLOA, HAWAII – Oregon wrapped up play at the Amer Ari Invitational with a 6 under par final round Saturday to finish the event in 10th place at 9 under overall against a loaded field of 20 teams. All five Ducks in the lineup shot even par or better, with three players shooting in red figures in the final round.
How it Happened: Kevin Geniza turned in the low round of the day for the Ducks, firing a 3-under 69 to finish the tournament tied for 65th. The senior birdied his second hole of the day – the par-4 10th – and got to 2 under with a birdie at 14. He gave back a pair of shots with bogeys on the next two holes, but didn't drop a shot the rest of his round while making three more birdies.
Craig Ronne again turned in a solid round, shooting a steady 2-under 70 to finish 4 under overall and a team-best tied for 33rd. After a bogey at his second hole of the day – the par-4 10th – he responded with birdies at 11, 17, one and two to reach 3 under before dropping a shot at the par-4 sixth.
Nate Stember delivered the third under par round of the day for the Ducks, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 39th at 3 under. After making two bogeys in his first five holes, the freshman clawed back into red figures thanks to three birdies in a four-hole stretch. Tom Gueant and Gian Luca Martinez both shot even-par 72s to round out the scoring for the Ducks.
What it Means: After a rough stretch to end the fall, the Ducks came out and put out a solid effort against an elite field to open the spring. Oregon finished ahead of ranked conference rivals Stanford (No. 25), Oregon State (No. 26) and USC (No. 30) and held their own against a field that included five top-20 teams. If the Ducks want to make a NCAA Regional push, this was a good way to start off the spring with numerous opportunities to make more noise against quality fields coming up.
Ducks on the Leaderboard:
10. Oregon – 282-291-282 – 855 (-9)
T33. Craig Ronne – 74-68-70 – 212 (-4)
T39. Nate Stember – 68-74-71 – 213 (-3)
