Dail Dominant in Win
02/08/20 | Softball
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Jordan Dail tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out 11 while allowing just four hits and walking one in Oregon's 1-0 win over Nevada Saturday in its fourth game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
How it Happened: Dail ran into some trouble right off the bat, giving up singles to the first two hitters of the game before a bunt put runners at second and third with one out. She worked out of the jam, though, picking up a strikeout and getting a groundout to end the threat.
The junior lefty got in a groove over the next three frames, retiring nine of the 10 she faced while striking out seven over that span. Dail again worked out of a jam in the fifth inning, keeping the Wolfpack (0-5) off the board after a leadoff double, keeping the Ducks in front, 1-0. She then retired six of the last seven she faced to end the game.
The Ducks (4-0) scored the game's only run in the bottom of the second, getting on the board first for the fourth straight game. After Rachel Cid led off the second inning with a single then moved to third on a fielder's choice and throwing error, Shaye Bowden drove her in with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
Box Score Notes: Cid scored the only run of the game, going 1-for-2 with a walk … Mya Felder had Oregon's only other hit, finishing 1-for-2 … Dail held Nevada to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and just 1-for-10 with runners on.
Notable: The shutout was the eighth of Dail's career and her sixth in the last two seasons at Oregon … It was her fifth 10-strikeout game as a Duck and the first in which she walked one or fewer batters … Oregon pitching has combined for 48 strikeouts and just two walks over the first four games … Of the 75 outs that have been recorded this year, 48 have been strikeouts (64 percent) … The Ducks have also given up just nine hits in 25 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .110 batting average.
On Deck: The Ducks will wrap up play at the Puerto Vallarta Collegiate Challenge Sunday against Long Beach State at 7:30 a.m. PT.
