Offense Leads Oregon Over Liberty
02/08/20 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. – Behind a combined 14 goals from the trio of Lillian Stump, Shonly Wallace and Jamie Level, the Oregon women's lacrosse team extended its win streak in season openers to seven with a 20-12 victory over Liberty on Saturday at Pape Field.
Stump and Wallace tallied five goals each to equal the program season-opener record held by three other players. The five-goal performance was the third in the last seven games for Stump dating back to last season. A transfer from Stony Brook, Wallace tallied a hat trick in the first half en route to her 7-point debut, which equaled the second-most points in a season opener by a Duck.
A season removed from advancing to the ASUN Championship Game, Liberty finished the 2019 season No. 14 nationally in scoring defense and it marks just the second time in its last 38 games its given up 20 goals. The 20-goal performance is the first under head coach Chelsea Gamble Hoffmann.
"I'm really happy. Our team was really selfless and you could see that in the way we pushed the fast-break," Gamble Hoffman said. "They were all really supportive of each other. They wanted to put Oregon on the board, rather than just individuals. I think it was the first game to really kick off and have a little more pride in our brand."
Oregon is now 11-5 all-time in season openers and 16-6 at home in February.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first six minutes of the game behind goals from four different players that forced a Liberty timeout. Wallace scored her first collegiate goal during the 4-1 start and added her second just over 10 minutes in to give the Ducks a 6-3 lead.
A goalie switch seemed to ignite the Flames, as Liberty erased the three-goal deficit to tie the game at 6-6 with 12:15 left in the half. The rest of the half belonged to Stump, as she hit the back of the net three times over a 3:33 span to help Oregon take a 10-7 lead at the half.
Liberty fought back within one, 10-9, with the first two goals of the second half, but the Ducks responded with a 9-2 run that lasted until the final minute of the game. Making her first career start in cage, junior Alle Dunbar made four of her six saves over the final 30 minutes. The quartet of Hanna Hilcoff, Carlie Leach, Level and Wallace provided the offense during the dominating run with two goals each.
NOTABLES: Dunbar registered her first career win in goal … Six different players scored a goal with four recording hat tricks … Stump has a hat trick in four consecutive games dating back to last year … Over her last seven games, Stump has 23 goals … Wallace had four of her seven points in the first half … Level filled up the stat sheet with four goals, two assists, four draw controls and three caused turnovers … Marked the fourth career hat trick for Level … Hilcoff recorded a hat trick in her first career game on a team-high eight shots … Sophomore Allison Brown scored her first collegiate goal in the second half.
