02/09/20 | Softball
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Three Oregon pitchers combined to give up just one run on four hits while the offense got to work early once again in a 4-1 win over Long Beach State Sunday in the final game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The Ducks are off to a 5-0 start for the fourth straight year, and the second in a row under head coach Melyssa Lombardi.
How it Happened: Oregon (5-0) again struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. After Haley Cruse and Allee Bunker each walked to lead off the game and moved to second and third on a wild pitch, Rachel Cid laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Cruse.
The Ducks added to the lead with a three-run second inning to make it 4-0. Hannah Galey singled with one out to score Jasmine Sievers, who led off with a walk, making it 2-0. Terra McGowan followed three batters later with a clutch two-out single up the middle, driving in Galey and Mya Felder.
Oregon pitchers Brooke Yanez, Samaria Diaz and Jordan Dail combined to give up just one run on four hits. Naomi Hernandez put Long Beach State (2-3) on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI double, but Diaz limited the damage to just that in her one inning of work.
Box Score Notes: Yanez grinded through four shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out three to earn her third win of the weekend … Dail picked up her first save as a Duck, retiring all six she faced over the final two innings … Cruse went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored … Shaye Bowden finished 2-for-3, with a pair of two-out singles … McGowan was 1-for-4 with two RBIs … Galey turned in a 1-for-3 day with an RBI and a run scored … Felder went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Weekend Notables: Oregon pitching finished the weekend with 52 strikeouts to only three walks over 32 innings in the five games … The Ducks posted a 0.44 ERA and allowed just 13 hits over the weekend, with a .123 batting average against … Yanez went 3-0 in her three appearances, posting a 0.50 ERA with 25 strikeouts over 14.0 innings … Dail did not allow a run over her 12.0 innings pitched, striking out 15 and walking one while picking up a win and a save … McGowan impressed in her first collegiate action, finishing the weekend 8-for-19 with three doubles, a home run and 10 RBIs with three runs scored … Cruse ended the weekend hitting .467 (7-for-15) with seven runs scored and a .579 on-base percentage while going 3-for-3 in stolen bases … Cid turned in a 6-for-14 weekend with six runs scored, a home run and four RBIs … The Ducks' defense committed no errors in 96 chances in the five games.
