EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon head coach Matt Ulmer announced the addition of transfer opposite Gloria Mutiri to the 2020 roster Tuesday. Mutiri signed on Feb. 5, after spending her freshman and sophomore seasons as a standout at Kansas State and will be eligible as a junior in the fall.
"Gloria is a big-time addition to our team," said Ulmer. "She can score points and put up an imposing block at the highest level. We are thrilled to add Gloria's experience and personality to our program."
Mutiri was a regular starter each of her two seasons at Kansas State, appearing in 55 matches and averaging 2.62 kills per set with a career .252 hitting percentage. She also recorded 137 total blocks (0.65 per set) and tallied 320 digs in her two years as a Wildcat, averaging 1.53 per set.
As a sophomore, Mutiri finished third on the team with 2.52 kills per set and 282 total kills and was the only Wildcat to see action in all 113 sets throughout the year. Her .242 hitting percentage was second on the team while she was third in blocks per set (0.62) and total blocks (70). She reached double figures in kills 16 times in 2019, including an 11-match streak from Aug. 31-Sept. 21.
Mutiri enjoyed a stellar freshman season in 2018, earning AVCA All-America honorable mention recognition while being named the AVCA Midwest Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Midwest Region. She was just the second Kansas State freshman to receive All-America recognition and one of 17 freshmen in 2018 to be named to an AVCA All-America team. Mutiri also earned All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors and was named second-team All-Big 12.
The lefty finished her freshman year second on the team in kills (271) and kills per set (2.77). She also recorded 192 digs (1.96 per set) and 67 total blocks, turning in three double-doubles while reaching double digits in kills 14 times. Mutiri was also named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week twice, after averaging 3.00 kills per set against UMKC and Green Bay in September, and following a 15-kill performance against TCU in the season finale.
