Ducks in Fourth After Windy Opening Round
01/25/21 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. – Oregon played its first competitive round since March of last year, fighting through windy conditions to shoot 16 over and sit in fourth following the opening round of the Arizona Intercollegiate Monday at Sewailo Golf Club.
Tom Gueant shot an even-par 71 and leads the way for the Ducks in a tie for fourth while Nate Stember joins Gueant in the top 10 in a tie for eighth after opening with a 1-over 72.
How It Happened: After making bogeys on two of his first three holes, Gueant bounced back by going bogey-free over the next nine holes with three birdies over that stretch to get to 1 under. He again made back-to-back bogeys at holes two and three, but got back to even with a birdie on the par-5 eighth to shoot 71.
Stember couldn't get much going on the back nine to open his round, shooting 3 over on his first nine, but kicked it into gear on the front. He birdied the par-4 second hole before bogeying the sixth, then finished with back-to-back birdies at eight and nine to shoot 2 under on the front nine.
Oregon's trio of newcomers in the lineup battled through the windy conditions in their first competitive rounds as Ducks. Freshman Yuki Moriyama shot a 7-over 78 and is tied for 45th while transfer Owen Avrit turned in an 8-over 79 to sit in a tie for 54th. Greg Solhaug shot an 11-over 82 in his first collegiate round.
The Ducks are 16 shots behind opening-round leader and tournament hosts, Arizona, while Gueant is four shots back of individual leader Brad Reeves.
Quotable: Head Coach Casey Martin
"Today was a brutal day. After not competing for nine months we were welcomed back with 35 mph winds and rain. But the guys kept it together when it looked like it could have gotten away from us. Nate and Tom played well. The other guys didn't play their best but I believe they will bounce back tomorrow."
