Rivalry Week Closes Regular Season For No. 14 Ducks
02/25/21 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's basketball team will wrap up the 2020-21 regular season this Sunday with a rivalry showdown against Oregon State in Matthew Knight Arena. Coming off an impressive performance last Sunday at USC, the No. 14 Ducks are looking to continue that momentum with the Pac-12 Tournament set to begin next week in Las Vegas.
Thank You, Seniors
Though it will look different without fans or family in the stands, the Ducks will honor seniors Erin Boley and Lydia Giomi following Sunday's contest. Boley and Giomi helped lead Oregon to three straight Pac-12 regular-season championships and a pair of conference tournament titles, and the pair has stepped up as the leaders of this young 2020-21 roster. "Erin Boley and Lydia Giomi exemplify everything that is great about intercollegiate athletics," head coach Kelly Graves said. "They are great people and will be very missed.
"We hopefully have a lot of basketball left and we're going to rely on both down the stretch. We need that senior leadersthip. But they are consumate collegiate professionals."

Series History vs. Oregon State
All-Time Series: Oregon leads, 64-41
Current Streak: Oregon W3
Last Meeting: Oregon won, 79-59 (12/13/20)
Last Time vs. Oregon State
While Oregon and Oregon State usually meet twice in the same weekend under normal circumstances, it's been more than two months since the first meeting between the two teams this season. Oregon won 79-59 on Dec. 13 in Corvallis, the program's biggest win over OSU since Feb. 6, 2010. Te-Hina Paopao (22) and Taylor Mikesell (21) impressed in their rivalry debut, combining for 43 points on 9-of-13 three-point shooting.

Numbers to Know
2.40 - Te-Hina Paopao is No. 2 in the NCAA among freshmen and No. 2 in the Pac-12 with a solid 2.40 assist-to-turnover ratio.
3 - Oregon has won 3 straight vs. Oregon State, including a 79-59 win over the then-No. 15 Beavers on 12/13 in Corvallis.
12 - The Ducks made 12 three-pointers last Sunday at USC, tying their season-high first set on 12/13 at Oregon State.
14 - Nyara Sabally leads Oregon with 14 double-figure scoring games this season as well as three double-doubles.
43 - Te-Hina Paopao (22) and Taylor Mikesell (21) combined for 43 points vs. OSU on 12/13, their first-ever meeting with the Beavers.
58.6 - Oregon is allowing just 58.6 PPG this season while holding 12 teams to fewer than 60 points and four to less than 50.
Quick Hits: #21 Erin Boley
» Oregon Career (89 GP, 89 GS): 10.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 0.9 APG, .456 FG% (353-774), .430 3PT% (210-488), .846 FT% (44-52).
» Collegiate Career (126 GP, 99 GS): 9.5 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 0.8 APG, .449 FG% (437-973), .423 3PT% (257-607), .861 FT% (68-79).
» 1,199 total career points, 960 as a Duck; 40 points away from becoming the 33rd 1,000-point scorer in Oregon history.
» Currently No. 5 all-time at Oregon with 210 made three-pointers as a Duck; One away from No. 4 (Maite Cazorla, 211).
» Second on team this season with 10.3 PPG and third with 10 double-figure scoring performances, including eight in Pac-12 play.
» Has already made more two-point field goals this season (48 in 18 games) than she did in all of 2019-20 (30 in 33 games).
Big Bounce-Back Win at USC
After a disappointing performance at UCLA last Friday, the Ducks were able to translate an intense and high-spirited practice on Saturday into an impressive performance at USC on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak. Oregon held a live scrimmage at practice - something head coach Kelly Graves said he has never done on a day between road games - to try and raise the team's intensity and hustle. The result was a 72-48 win over the Trojans in which the Ducks never trailed, a product of a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense. Oregon matched its season-high with 12 three-pointers - done last on Dec. 13 at Oregon State - while holding its opponent to less than 50 points for the fourth time this season. Four Ducks scored in double figures - Sydney Parrish (17), Erin Boley (13), Nyara Sabally (11) and Sedona Prince (11) - and Oregon built some good momentum going into this Sunday's regular-season finale. "They were challenged (on Saturday)," said Graves. "We had a great practice, very high-spirited. We did a lot live (scrimmaging) in practice and I think it paid off (at USC). This was a good win and I think a good character win. I think it shows that this team has some character and the kind of mental make-up that is necessary to continue to compete down the stretch."

Ducks Playing Solid Defense
The new-look Ducks have been searching for their offensive identity for much of 2020-21, but Oregon's terrific play on the defensive end has kept Kelly Graves' squad in the top 15 in the AP national rankings all season. Oregon is giving up just 58.6 points per game through 19 contests, not far off from last season's program-record of 57.9 points per game allowed. The Ducks have held six of their last nine opponents and 12 total teams to fewer than 60 points this season, and Oregon has kept four teams under 50 points following last Sunday's 72-48 win at USC. UO is holding teams to 36.8 percent shooting from the field and just 29.6 percent from three-point range, and the Ducks are forcing 15.3 turnovers per game. Oregon forced a season-high 23 turnovers and allowed a season-low 41 points to California on Jan. 10, tied for the fewest points the Ducks have given up in a conference game since Jan. 17, 2009.
Paopao Could Be Next In Graves' Line Of Great Point Guards
Few coaches have developed point guards as successfully as Kelly Graves, who recruited and coached the only two players ever to surpass 2,000 career points and 1,000 assists - Sabrina Ionescu and Courtney Vandersloot. With Ionescu's legendary career at an end, Graves immediately turned to Te-Hina Paopao, who he believes "has a chance a chance to be a real star." Paopao (10.2 PPG, 4.4 APG, 3.2 RPG) has been impressive running Oregon's offense as a true freshman and is coming off a solid showing last Sunday at USC in which she set a new career-high with eight assists while committing just two turnovers.
So far in 2020-21, Te-Hina Paopao...
» Is the only Duck to start all 19 games after becoming the first true freshman to start a season opener for UO since Sabrina Ionescu (2016-17).
» Ranks No. 2 in the Pac-12 and No. 2 among NCAA freshmen (Paige Bueckers, UConn) with a 2.40 assist-to-turnover ratio.
» Ranks second in the conference and eighth in UO freshman single-season history with 84 total assists (4.4 per game).
» Has racked up 11 double-figure scoring performances (all in Pac-12 play), second-most on the team.
» Is one of four Ducks with a 20-point performance, scoring a career-high 22 points at Oregon State on Dec. 13.
Sabally Well Worth The Wait
It's been a long two-plus years for Nyara Sabally - who lost the opportunity to play with her sister Satou Sabally after suffering knee injuries in each of her first two seasons as a Duck - but so far in 2020-21 it seems the 6-foot-5 forward was well worth the wait. The redshirt sophomore enters Sunday's game vs. Oregon State having scored in double figures in five straight games and 12 of her last 13 after finishing with 11 on 3-of-3 three-point shooting in Oregon's win at USC.
So far in 2020-21, Nyara Sabally...
» Is one of only two players in the Pac-12 (Mya Hollingshed, CU) to lead their team in PPG (12.3), RPG (7.1), FGs (91) and blocks (22).
» Ranks No. 3 in the Pac-12 in field-goal percentage (55.5%), No. 5 in rebounds per game (7.1) and No. 7 in blocked shots.
» Leads UO with 14 double-figure scoring games and three double-doubles (20P & 10R vs. CU; 19P & 14R at WSU; 10P & 11R at STAN).
» Tied for the seventh-best individual shooting performance in UO single-game history on Dec. 4 vs. Colorado (9-of-9 FG).
» Is showing her shooting range at 6-foot-5, going 7-of-12 (.583) so far from three-point range (3-of-3 Sunday at USC).

Simple Plays
Oregon has done a tremendous job of sharing and being smart with the basketball since Kelly Graves arrived, leading the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio each of the last two seasons. The new-look Ducks kept this trend going in the 2020-21 opener vs. Seattle with 22 total assists and a season-low three turnovers, and Oregon dished out a season-high 26 assists on 42 field goals against just five turnovers in the Jan. 10 win at California. UO enters the final weekend of the regular season ranked No. 2 in the Pac-12 and No. 15 in the nation with a 1.29 team assist-to-turnover ratio, and 23rd in the NCAA with just 12.5 turnovers per game. Freshman point guard Te-Hina Paopao ranks second in the Pac-12 and second among NCAA freshmen with a solid 2.40 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Parrish Coming On Strong
Freshman Sydney Parrish arrived in Eugene as the top-rated Duck in Oregon's No. 1 ranked recruiting class, and the Indiana native is coming into her own as postseason play looms. Parrish has five double-figure scoring performances after leading Oregon with 17 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting with four steals last Sunday at USC, and she is 10-of-24 (.417) from three-point range since Jan. 24. Parrish was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Dec. 21 after scoring a career-high 18 points with four triples at Washington on Dec. 19, and she enters Sunday's game averaging 7.1 points per game.
These Freshmen Are ... Wow
The Ducks reloaded this year's roster with the first top-ranked recruiting class in program history, bringing in five top-25 players who were all Gatorade state players of the year and McDonalds all-Americans. Oregon's "Fab Five" has immediately lived up to the hype, combining for 479 points, 254 rebounds, 142 assists and 22 total double-figure scoring performances through 19 games. The five freshmen combined for 41 points on 51.5 percent shooting with 16 assists in Oregon's 100-41 win at California on Jan. 10, matching or outperforming the entire Golden Bears squad (41 Pts, 29.1 FG%, 10 Ast) on their own in all three categories. The freshman production certainly goes beyond Te-Hina Paopao, UO's third-leading scorer, primary ball-handler, and the only Duck to start all 19 games this season. Sydney Parrish (7.1 PPG) has five double-figure scoring games after leading UO with 17 points last Sunday at USC, and Angela Dugalic (4.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG) is Oregon's second-leading rebounder and nearly had her first career double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds in her first career start on Jan. 24. Guard Maddie Scherr (2.7 PPG) is arguably Oregon's best on-ball defender, and forward Kylee Watson (2.2 PPG) has two double-figure scoring games.
Prince's Return Provides Boost
After missing the last two seasons - first due to a knee injury and then NCAA transfer rules - and then dealing with an ankle injury that forced her to miss five games this season, redshirt sophomore Sedona Prince appears to finally be back at full strength for the Ducks. The 6-foot-7 center returned to the starting lineup on Jan. 22-24 for the first time since Dec. 4, leading the Ducks to a weekend and season sweep of the Washington schools. Prince scored in double figures in four straight games from Jan. 22 to Feb. 8, including 16 points and seven rebounds on Jan. 24 vs. UW. Prince also blocked five shots vs. the Huskies, the most by a Duck since March 2018 and second-most ever by an Oregon player inside Matthew Knight Arena. Prince (8.9 PPG, 3.7 RPG, .530 FG%) has seven double-figure scoring games after finishing with 11 points off the bench last Sunday at USC, doing all of her damage in the second half with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting in the fourth quarter alone.
Depth On Full Display
Despite having to replace four starters - including three top-10 WNBA Draft picks - Kelly Graves boasts one of the deepest teams in the country this season. Oregon has had 11 different players combine for 65 total double-figure scoring performances through 19 games, and seven different Ducks have led or tied for the team lead in scoring at least once after Sedona Prince paced UO in scoring against both WSU and Washington on Jan. 22-24. At least 10 different players have scored in nine of 19 games, including seven straight to open the season, and Nyara Sabally (12.3), Erin Boley (10.3) and Te-Hina Paopao (10.2) are all averaging double figures with six more Ducks averaging at least 4.0 PPG. Oregon has had nine different starting-lineup combinations already - with Paopao the only player to start every game - and the Ducks have racked up a whopping 502 bench points through just 19 contests (26.4 per game).
Thank You, Seniors
Though it will look different without fans or family in the stands, the Ducks will honor seniors Erin Boley and Lydia Giomi following Sunday's contest.
