No. 14 Ducks Complete Weekend Sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 14 Oregon volleyball team put a cap on a successful home-opening weekend with a straight-set victory (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) over San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena. With the result, the Ducks improve to 3-0 through the first two days of the 2021 season.

Brooke Nuneviller recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs to go along with two service aces. Kylie Robinson added a double-double of her own with 14 assists and 10 digs.

Up Next: Oregon heads to the state of Texas next weekend for matches against No. 23 Rice (Sept. 2) and SMU (Sept. 3). The Ducks are back home Sept. 10-11 for the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge. Including UO, the field features four ranked team in No. 7 Minnesota, No. 12 Penn State and No. 21 Stanford.

In the opening set, the Ducks jumped out to a 9-4 advantage but San Jose State (1-1) began to chip away and eventually took a 15-14 lead after back-to-back kills from Amethyst Harper. Oregon responded with by winning seven of the next nine points to pull back ahead, 21-17. Karson Bacon posted two kills during the run. The Ducks secured the first set (25-19) on an attack error by the visitors.

The second set between Oregon and San Jose State featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Things were tied at 15-all but the home team put together a quick 5-1 surge to create separation on the scoreboard. Taylor Borup capped the run with consecutive kills; UO led 20-16. The Spartans got no closer than two the remainder of the set and Hansen secured the 2-0 match lead with a kill.

The two teams split the first eight points of the third set but Oregon won seven of the next eight points to pull ahead. Gloria Mutiri put down a kill to double up SJSU at 12-6 and the lead grew to double digits at 16-6 on another kill from Bacon.

However, San Jose State crept back into the set and pulled to within four—UO led 21-17—to force head coach Matt Ulmer to use a timeout. The Ducks responded immediately with a kill by Borup followed by a tandem block featuring Bacon and Borup. On the team's second match point, Borup secured the sweep with her fourth kill of the set.

Borup and Mutiri were crucial down the stretch, combining for nine of Oregon's 16 kills in the third set.
