All-American Trio; Colyer Named Nation’s Top Freshman
12/14/22 | Women's Volleyball
Mimi Colyer is the first National Freshman of the Year in program history.
EUGENE, Ore. – On the heels of a postseason run to the NCAA Elite 8, the Oregon volleyball team racked up three AVCA All-America honors as announced Wednesday morning. The governing body, represented by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee, recognized the standout seasons of Mimi Colyer, Brooke Nuneviller and Hannah Pukis.
Standout newcomer Colyer was named the 2022 AVCA National Freshman of the Year and was a third-team pick. For a third season in a row, Nuneviller was recognized and, after back-to-back second-team selections, earned her place on the All-America First Team. Pukis, in her first season in Eugene, secured second-team accolades.
There are 14 players on each of the three AVCA All-America teams—42 total—as well as 53 honorable mention selections.
With Wednesday's announcement, Colyer, Nuneviller and Pukis become the third UO trio to earn AVCA All-America (team) honors in the same season, and the second triumvirate to do so under the watch of head coach Matt Ulmer.
Oregon All-America Trios
2022: Brooke Nuneviller (1), Hannah Pukis (2), Mimi Colyer (3)
2018: Ronika Stone (2), August Raskie (3), Lindsey Vander Weide (3)
2012: Alaina Bergsma (1), Lauren Plum (1), Liz Brenner (2)
Colyer puts a bow on her outstanding campaign as the Duck's first-ever National Freshman of the Year, and the seventh in Pac-12 history. She becomes the first freshman in program history to be voted to one of the three All-America teams; Nuneviller was an honorable mention pick as a freshman libero in 2018.
Already the Pac-12 and AVCA Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year, Colyer completed the trifecta with Wednesday's national award. She led all NCAA freshmen with 616.5 points and 533 kills, ranking 10th and 11th, respectively, in the nation overall. Colyer set a conference record as an eight-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week winner and with 26 kills against No. 7 Nebraska in the NCAA regional semifinal, she tallied the first 500-kill season for Oregon since 2013 (Liz Brenner).
The Lincoln, Calif., native finished the year fourth in the Pac-12 with 4.85 points per set and fifth with 4.20 kills per set while hitting .265 in her first collegiate season. Colyer led the Ducks with 40 aces and averaged 2.01 digs per set on her way to 12 double-doubles in 2022.
Nuneviller caps her storied UO career as the program's first three-time All-American, having previously been selected following the 2021 spring and fall seasons when she earned second-team honors. She is now the fourth Duck to earn first-team status, joining Sue Harbour (1984), Alaina Bergsman (2012) and Lauren Plum (2012).
In her final season in Green and Yellow, Nuneviller put down a career-best 3.98 kills per set coupled with a career-high .281 hitting percentage. She finished sixth in the Pac-12 in both kills per set and points per set (4.43). Nuneviller also averaged 2.92 digs per set and led Oregon with 22 double-doubles—pushing her career total to 70—including three in four matches during the NCAA Tournament.
Against Nebraska in the regional semifinal, the Chandler, Ariz., native made history when she became the first player in Pac-12 history to reach 1,500 career kills and 2,000 career digs. She finished the match with 16 kills and 15 digs including a dig-kill combo to clinch the fourth set against the Cornhuskers.
Pukis becomes the third UO setter in program history—Plum, Raskie—to add All-America accolades to her resume. She was an AVCA honorable mention performer during the spring 2021 season during her career at Washington State.
Pukis established a new career high with 11.18 assists per set during the year, good for second in the Pac-12 and 10th in the NCAA. She also helped lead Oregon to a new program record with a .293 hitting percentage, another top-10 national figure. Pukis set the team to a .300 or higher hitting percentage 11 times during Pac-12 and NCAA Tournament matches.
The Tacoma, Wash., native was third on the team with 2.66 digs per set and had 14 double-doubles this season. In the Ducks' Sweet 16 matchup with Nebraska, Pukis delivered a stat line of 57 assists, 20 digs, six kill and two service aces to help UO to the five-set victory. She ended the season with a career-high 24 aces.
