Three Top-10 National Times in Boston
02/27/22 | Track and Field
Aaron Bienenfeld (13:21.99) broke the German national record in the 5,000 meters with his performance Sunday.
BOSTON, Mass. – In search of national qualifiers, the Men of Oregon distance crew collected three top-10 national marks Sunday at the BU Last Chance Meet. The performances came from Aaron Bienenfeld (5,000 meters), Reed Brown (mile) and Jack Yearian (mile).
Â
In the first section of the 5,000 meters, Bienenfeld recorded a nearly 10-second lifetime with a time of 13:21.99 to win the event. He also becomes the No. 2 performer in UO history—trailing only Galen Rupp (13:18.12)—and posts the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Bienenfeld entered Sunday's race with a previous best of 13:31.65 from his career at Cincinnati.
Â
Bienenfeld also took down the German national record in the indoor 5K, replacing the time of 13:27.53 set by Arne Gabius in 2015. Bienenfeld also owns a season's best of 7:46.09 in the 3,000 meters, another top-20 time in the NCAA this year.
Â
Yearian and Brown became the sixth and seventh collegians under 3:55 this season with their respective times of 3:54.54 and 3:54.77 in Sunday's mile. Based on the times entering the day, those performances stand as the No. 6 and 8 times in the NCAA this season; the top eight features a time adjusted down due to altitude.
Â
With Sunday's result, Yearian destroyed his previous best of 4:00.85 from February 2020 and becomes the 29th UO man to run a sub-4:00 indoor mile. Brown also recorded a lifetime best, taking down a time of 3:56.61 from a season ago.
