Ducks Grind Out Win Over Huskies
01/13/23 | Women's Basketball
Oregon surrendered the lead in the fourth quarter but made big plays down the stretch to beat Washington on Friday.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Ducks got a scare Friday from Washington, but the Oregon women's basketball team pulled away down the stretch to beat the Huskies 65-58 before 6,497 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The No. 21 Ducks (13-4, 4-2 Pac-12) shot 41.1 percent on the night, including 37 percent in the first half. But after UW put together a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter to lead 52-51 with 4:39 to play, Oregon made its last four shots from the field and got enough stops down the stretch to get the win.
"I congratulate Washington — they played hard, played really well, gave us everything we can handle," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "But I'm really proud of our team. We made the plays down the stretch, especially defensively and also on the offensive end. It certainly wasn't our best game tonight. But it's a Pac-12 win, and that in the end is what matters."
Taya Hanson was 4-of-4 from three-point range with 15 points, including a dagger three for a 60-54 lead with 23.3 seconds left in the game. That bucket was assisted by Te-Hina Paopao, who had 16 points with five assists on the night. Grace VanSlooten started despite being banged up five days earlier at Arizona, and she finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
How It Happened: Oregon's lack of offensive flow was apparent from the start, as the Ducks' first field goal of the night didn't come until VanSlooten scored nearly three minutes into the game. But with the UO women trailing 5-3, Paopao hit a three-pointer to spark a 12-4 run for a 15-9 lead. The Ducks led 16-11 after one quarter.
Thanks to two baskets from VanSlooten early in the second, Oregon still led by five — at 22-17 — when Hanson hit her first three-pointer of the night. That gave the Ducks an eight-point lead, and that was the margin at halftime, 29-21.

Washington wasn't going to go down without a fight, though, and mounted a 10-2 run coming out of halftime to tie it, at 31-31. It took two more three-pointers by Hanson in the final two minutes of the third quarter to give the Ducks a 45-39 lead entering the fourth.
"I give it to Washington, they did not give up and they were relentless," Hanson said. "And they gave us some trouble on the offensive end, with their defensive pressure."
Paopao took command early in the fourth, scoring twice for a 49-39 lead. But the Ducks, who had forced multiple shot-clock violations earlier in the game, suffered breakdowns defensively that helped the Huskies mount a 13-2 run to lead 52-51.
Paopao scored again to end that run, however, Phillipina Kyei made it 55-52 on the next possession and Endyia Rogers made her first basket since the first quarter for a 57-52 lead. After UW scored to end that 6-0 run, Hanson made her fourth three-pointer with 23.3 seconds left, giving the Ducks a 60-54 lead that they made stand up from the free-throw line in the closing moments.
"We just had to dig in and trust each other," Paopao said. "Trust we were going to find the right person, shoot the ball, make the right reads. We just had each other's backs."

Notable: Ahlise Hurst returned to action for the first time since being injured Dec. 30. She had two points in 15 minutes of action. … Newly enrolled freshman Sammie Wagner, who joined the team for practices this week as winter quarter began at the university, was on the bench for the first time. Wagner is planning to sit out this season as a redshirt. … The Ducks have now won 10 straight over Washington.
Quotable:
UO coach Kelly Graves on the availability of VanSlooten after she missed practice time during the week.
"She was literally a game-time decision. We put down four starters (on the lineup card), and then at the 15-minute mark when we have to give a fifth one, that's when she decided to play. That was her decision, and it was the trainer's decision. I was the last to know, but I'm glad that she did. Because we needed her, and I thought she played pretty well under the circumstances."
Senior Taya Hanson on the role Graves looks for her to provide for this team
"He want me to come in. bring that intensity, the passion, and of course (knock) down those shots he knows I can make, and I know I can make. My teammates believe I can make them as well. So it's just a lot of fun. And we have amazing fans — I think the best in the country. So I'm just thankful to be a Duck and be a part of this. It's so fun."
