Ducks Drop Fifth Straight
02/12/23 | Women's Basketball
Oregon fought back from a second-half deficit but UCLA made more plays down the stretch to win Sunday.
LOS ANGELES — Oregon fought back from a second-half deficit to tie Sunday's matinee at No. 18 UCLA late in the fourth quarter, but the Bruins pulled away again to win 67-57 before 3,629 fans at Pauley Pavilion.
An 11-2 run in the third quarter gave UCLA a 43-35 lead, but the UO women fought back and tied it at 55-55 on a three-pointer by Endyia Rogers with 3:23 to play. That would be Oregon's last field goal of the game, as the Bruins sent the Ducks to their fifth straight defeat.
"They made some baskets late, executed pretty well — better than we did," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "But I was proud of our effort. We bounced back. There's no quit in this team. I know a lot of people are disappointed; nobody is more disappointed than our players and our coaches. We get that. But at the same time, it's a process. We've gotta continue to grind and figure out a way to scratch out a win here."
Rogers led Oregon (14-11, 5-9 Pac-12) with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Chance Gray and Grace VanSlooten scored 13 apiece. Phillipina Kyei added eight points and 13 rebounds, while the rest of the team combined for just four points.
How It Happened: After surrendering the opening basket of the game, Oregon went on a 10-4 run capped by a Rogers three-pointer to lead 10-6. After the Bruins took the lead, buckets by Rogers and Gray put the Ducks back up 14-11, and a jumper by Kennedy Basham — the only UO points of the game off the bench — gave the UO women a 16-14 lead after one quarter.

Kyei scored to put Oregon back up four early in the second, 18-14. The Bruins then rallied to tie it for the first of six times in the quarter, as the Ducks would repeatedly score to take a lead and UCLA would answer back. The sixth and final tie of the period was at halftime, 28-28.
VanSlooten scored to open the third, and she later hit three free throws across two possessions for a 33-32 lead. That was Oregon's final advantage of the game, as UCLA mounted an 11-2 run that included a trio of three-pointers. The Ducks closed back within five a couple of times before trailing 47-40 at the end of the fourth.
After getting within five three more times early in the fourth, the fourth time was the charm. It was 53-48 when Kyei scored to make it a one-possession game, and Rogers followed a UCLA miss with two free throws to make it 53-52. The Bruins scored at the other end, before Rogers made her three-pointer to tie it. But UCLA made its last four field-goal attempts of the game, while the Ducks missed their last five and also committed two offensive fouls down the stretch.
Notable: One of the Ducks' 2021-22 seniors, Shannon Dufficy, was in attendance for the game. … Oregon has lost five straight for the first time since the 2015-16 season, Graves' second in Eugene. … UCLA scored 18 points off UO turnovers, after USC had 17 on Friday.

Quotable:
UO coach Kelly Graves on the comeback effort in the second half
"We withstood that run of theirs and got it back together. And then down the stretch they got second-chance points. We were trying to trap that little dribble handoff; they kept getting that shot there at the free-throw line. … We were just late on it, and they ended up getting the shots."
UO coach Kelly Graves on who stood out for the Ducks
"I was proud of Kennedy Basham; I thought she came in and gave us some really good minutes. Chance Gray was really, really good; she got downhill, got to the rim. And Endy I thought had a solid game, as well as Grace. I thought we played well enough. We just unfortunately again didn't make plays down the stretch."
Up Next: The Ducks remain on the road next week and play at WSU on Friday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
