McGowan, Bottom of the Order Key to Sweep
02/18/23 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – Terra McGowan drove in six runs and Stevie Hansen was dominant in the circle for the second straight day as No. 24 Oregon swept a pair of 2022 NCAA Tournament teams – LMU and San Diego State - Saturday at the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The Ducks (7-2) also got a big boost from the bottom of the lineup as the seven, eight and nine batters combined to hit .500 (9-for-18) on Saturday.
McGowan tied her career high with five RBI to power the Ducks past LMU 9-4 in the first game.
In the nightcap against SDSU, Hansen threw 5.2 strong innings as Oregon turned away a late rally for a 6-4 win
"We knew it was going to be a tough day against two great teams and it was just about taking one game at a time," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi.
How it Happened Game 1: McGowan matched her career high in RBI in just three innings. She belted a two-run home run in the first, drove in two more with a single in the second and added one more RBI on a single in the third inning.
"She hit the ball hard every single time she came up," said Lombardi. "She had opportunities to score runners and she clutched up for us."
The Lions (2-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Oregon scored the game's next eight runs. With Paige Sinicki on base after a walk in the bottom of the first, McGowan hit her first home run of the season out to left center. Two outs later, KK Humphreys sent the ball out of the yard in straightaway center field, her second of the year.
The Ducks made it 6-1 in the second inning. Oregon loaded the bases on singles by Kedre Luschar and Tehya Bird and a walk to Karissa Ornelas. McGowan drove in two runs with a single through the left side of the infield. Ornelas moved to third on an Allee Bunker fielder's choice and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Ducks scored two more runs in the third inning after loading the bases on consecutive singles by Ariel Carlson, Luschar and Bird. Ornelas singled to right to score Carlson and then McGowan singled through the right side of the infield to plate Luschar with her fifth RBI of the game.
At that point, Oregon led 8-1, but LMU scored three times in the top of the fourth to make it 8-4.

Carlson homered off the top of the bleachers in right field in the bottom of the fourth for the Ducks final run of the game.
After the Lions drew within four in the fourth, Elise Sokolsky came on in relief and gave up only one hit in two scoreless innings to earn her first victory in an Oregon uniform.
How it Happened Game 2: Hansen held SDSU (7-2) in check for five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. She scattered four hits through the first five innings to keep the Aztecs off the board.
She gave up two runs on three hits in the sixth inning before yielding to the bullpen. For the game, Hansen (3-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out four in 5.2 innings for her third win of the season.
When Hansen exited, Oregon led 6-2, but had to weather an SDSU rally in the bottom of the seventh. Jillian Celis hit a one-out single off Raegan Breedlove and then Mac Barbara homered to cut the Ducks' lead to 6-4.
AJ Murphy singled and Oregon called upon Morgan Scott out of the pen. Scott gave up a single to put runners on first and second with one out, but she got Taylor Okada to ground into a 5-3 double play to end the game.
"To see the grit and to see the last play go to Tehya and for her to step on third and throw to first for the double play – we talk about double play balls all the time so it was nice to see that happen," said Lombardi.
The game was scoreless until the Ducks pushed across a run in the fourth inning. Bunker reached on an error at third and Humphreys sacrificed her to second. Daniell singled Bunker to third and scored on Luschar's infield single for a 1-0 lead.
Oregon scored twice in the top of the fifth. Kyla Morris singled through the left side of the infield and Sinicki bunted for a single. Morris advanced to third on a McGowan line out and Sinicki stole second. Bunker then singled up the middle to score both runners for a 3-1 lead.
After SDSU scored once in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2, the Ducks added some much-needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Morris reached base with her third hit of the night.
"Being in the nine-spot the most important thing is just turning over the lineup and get the momentum going," said Morris. "That's just my job in the nine-spot."
Sinicki then beat out an infield single and both runners moved up 60 feet on a throwing error on the play. McGowan singled into center to plate Morris on her sixth RBI of the day. Sinicki was called out after a rundown on Bunker's fielder's choice.
With two outs, Humphreys came through with s sharp single into left to score McGowan and when the ball got by the left fielder. Bunker came home with the Ducks' sixth run of the game.
Noteworthy: McGowan matched her career high with five RBI against LMU. She had five RBI as a freshman against George Washington in 2020 … McGowan threw out her fifth baserunner of the season in the second inning against LMU … Morris tied her career high from Duke with three hits … Ornelas recorded her first hit and RBI of the season against the Lions … Bird had the first multi-hit game of her career against LMU … In 13.1 innings at the Campbell/Cartier Classic, Hansen is 2-0 with 17 strikeouts … Bunker had her seven-game hitting streak come to an end against LMU … This was the first meeting between Oregon and San Diego State since 2015 … The Ducks and LMU will meet again in two weeks at the Judi Garman Classic.
