PULLMAN, Wash. — The Ducks struggled with turnovers and second half defense, falling 68-65 to Washington State.?a
How It Happened: Oregon jumped out to an early lead, hitting three of their first four three point attempts. Will Richardson, who went scoreless last game, hit two early ones and The Ducks found themselves with a 12-7 lead at the first media timeout. Washington State countered with a 10-0 run after forcing six turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, forcing the Ducks to call timeout down 17-12.
Oregon found a recipe for success on offense by attacking the basket and winning one-on-one matchups. A series of driving layups from Rigsby, Barthelemy, Dante and Couisnard got the Ducks back on solid ground with a 20-19 lead. From there, the two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the half, as Oregon still struggled with turnovers. The good news for Oregon was the poor shooting for the Cougars, who finished the half shooting 29 percent, with Oregon shooting 46 percent. The half went to a close with Oregon holding a 30-27 lead, following a strong defensive sequence from the Ducks.
The Cougars started the second half hot from long range, hitting their first three attempts. At the 13-minute mark, WSU held a 46-41 lead after starting the half on a 19-11 run. Oregon bounced back with a 7-0 run led by Barthelemy, who stole an in-bound pass and finished the layup. After an empty possession for the Cougars, Barthelemy attacked the paint to cap the run, leaving the Ducks down three with eight minutes left.
Oregon regained the lead briefly late in the second half, before trading baskets with Washington State for the remainder of the contest. With 52 seconds to play, Oregon trailed by one. After missing consecutive shots and coming up with consecutive offensive boards, the Cougars hit a driving lay-in to take a three point lead. Oregon missed a shot as time expired, falling 68-65.
Up Next: The Ducks travel to Corvallis to face OSU at 7:00 p.m. PT on Saturday.
