High-Scoring Shootout Goes To Utes
02/05/23 | Women's Basketball
Oregon had one of its best offensive performances of the season in Pac-12 play but lost 100-92 to Utah on Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon put together its best offensive performance in recent weeks, but Utah was even better Sunday as the No. 7 Utes won 100-92 before 6,289 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
One of the five most efficient offensive teams in the country entering Sunday, the Utes were all of that against the Ducks, shooting 62.3 percent overall and 52 percent from three-point range. They had 50 points in the paint, 39 on three-pointers and 29 assists on 38 field goals.
"I liked our fight tonight," said UO coach Kelly Graves, whose Ducks shot 50 percent themselves and were 9-of-19 from three after going 0-of-16 on Friday. "Offensively, we finally got some things rolling a little bit. It's kind of been how we've done it this year — the days we defend pretty well, we can't get it together offensively, and now today offensively we did some good things and we just couldn't stop Utah."
Endyia Rogers scored a career-high 35 points for Oregon, leading four players in double figures. Chance Gray had 18 points plus four assists, Grace VanSlooten scored 16 points and had five rebounds with four assists, and Taya Hanson added 13 points.

"(Rogers) has nights like this when she can really get going, and we tried to feed her," Graves said. "And then for a while it was Chance, and we got her some good looks. But yeah Endy, she's got a big heart. She doesn't like losing."
How It Happened: Utah's Alissa Pili ended the night with 30 points, after beginning the game with the first five points of the day. Oregon answered with seven straight including a three-pointer by Rogers, and a three-point play from VanSlooten put the Ducks up 10-7. Two quick threes helped Utah get back in front at 16-12, before VanSlooten and Rogers capped a 6-0 run to put Oregon ahead 18-16. Rogers scored to end the first period with the UO women up 23-22.
VanSlooten completed another three-point play early in the second that put Oregon up 33-30. On each of the next two Utah possessions, the Ducks made the Utes work and forced them to attempt a shot right before the shot clock expired, but both shots were good as Utah continued to keep pace. Two more quick threes got the Utes back in front at 42-39, sparking an 11-0 run that helped Utah to a 47-41 halftime lead.

The Ducks continued to battle, getting back within one on a Gray three-pointer that made it 52-51. Oregon trailed 56-53 when Rogers put together a personal 5-0 run that got the Ducks back in front. But Utah scored the next six straight, going on to make eight straight field-goal attempts on the way to a 74-67 lead. The Ducks got back within 76-71 on a jumper by Hanson to cap the third.
Baskets by Rogers and Hanson to open the fourth got Oregon within one at 76-75, and Rogers scored on three straight UO possessions to again make it a one-possession game at 82-80. But the Ducks weren't quite able to keep up with Utah's scintillating offensive pace, as the Utes eventually cracked the century mark from the free-throw line.
Notable: Sunday was the program's alumni game, with several dozen former players on hand to be recognized. … The Ducks have now lost five of their last six games, and have their first three-game losing streak of the season. … Oregon had won eight straight over Utah in Eugene. … Taylor Hosendove's nine rebounds were her most since grabbing a season-high 10 against UCLA on Dec. 30.

Quotable:
UO coach Kelly Graves on the impact of Alissa Pili for the Utes
"Pili's the best player in the conference. I told her after the game I think she's the best player, and if I had a vote today she gets my MVP vote. She is what sets them apart. Other than that, they've got a bunch of really nice players that can move around and shoot. They run great stuff, they play with confidence, they play fast, they share the ball. But she's the hammer — she's the one that makes it all go, puts it together."
UO coach Kelly Graves on recent struggles for Te-Hina Paopao
"She's pressing. I know she wants to do the right thing; she's leading, our kids are looking for her to lead. I think sometimes she might feel like she's not worthy of it, when she herself might be struggling a little bit. It's nothing physical as far as I know. I really feel for her because she's a great, great young lady and competitor. She's just in one of those slumps right now. And there's nothing that we can do to kind of get her out of it. That's got to come from her. And I'm confident that she'll find her way through it."
