Dominant Effort Lifts Ducks over Trojans
02/09/23 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon played one of their most complete games of the season, defeating USC 78-60 on Thursday night in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks shot over 50 percent from the field, making 89 percent of free throws on the night. With 16:29 left in the first half, the game was tied at 6-6, the last time Oregon would not hold the lead in the contest. The Ducks built a double-digit lead with a 13-0 run, and would lead for the remaining 38 minutes and 15 seconds of the contest.?
How It Happened: The Ducks could not have drawn up a better start to the contest. After trading baskets early, Oregon would go on an 18-1 run that included a 13-0 run, and the Ducks would lead by as many as 18 points in the half. N'Faly Dante started things off down low, going four-of-seven from the field for nine first half points. The 13-0 run was sparked by a hot streak from Jermaine Couisnard, who went four-of-six from the field with 11 points in the period.
The run was answered by Boogie Ellis and Drew Peterson for USC, with eight and nine points respectively. Thankfully the Ducks answered a few of those baskets to maintain a double-digit lead at the half, leading 42-27.
Not much changed in the second half for Oregon, with the Ducks leading by 15 or more points for the remainder of the half. The Ducks slowly matched each of USC's baskets with smart plays and well-executed half-court offense. With a minute to play, Oregon had pushed the lead to a game-high 20 points to put things out of reach.
Who Stood Out: Will Richardson managed the game for Oregon and notched 16 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Dante finished with a team-high 17 points (8-11 FG) and five rebounds. Jermaine Couisnard was also a key figure in maintaining the lead, notching 13 points.
Quotable:
"We played pretty hard tonight and our depth was good," Head Coach Dana Altman said. "I thought defensively we played good. We beat them in every category, except in second-chance points, which kind of kept them in the game in the second half.
Other than that, we beat them on the boards, we had 40-something deflections, our activity was good. That was one of our better efforts."
