Ducks Drop Extra Inning Game
03/17/23 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 20 Oregon received a strong pitching performance from Stevie Hansen, but mistakes on the bases proved costly in a 3-1 loss in eight innings to No. 7 Stanford Friday in front of 1,659 at Jane Sanders Stadium. It was the 2023 home opener for the Ducks who played their first 25 games of the season away from Eugene.
"We were battling, we went to extra innings," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "It's just about being complete and finishing it. We needed to finish it."
How it Happened: The Cardinal (23-2, 1-0) got a run in the first inning when leadoff batter Taylor Gindlesperger tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly.
The Ducks (18-7, 1-4) put runners on second and third with one out in the second inning, but ran themselves out of a scoring opportunity when Hanna Delgado and Ariel Carlson were doubled up trying to advance on Tehya Bird's fielder's choice.
Oregon tied the game up in the third when Terra McGowan scored from first on Allee Bunker's double to deep left center. It was Bunker's 43rd career double. That moved her past Janie Takeda Reed (42/2012-15) for second on the UO career doubles list. Bunker now trails only all-time leader Jenna Lilley (2015-18), who had 52 career doubles.
Hansen worked out of trouble all game long. She had at least one runner reach base in all five innings, but only allowed the lone run in the first inning. Hansen yielded seven hits while striking out two and walking one.

"I thought Stevie did great," Lombardi said. "There were a couple of balls hit hard but overall she gave us a chance to win and that's what we need from her is to give us a chance to win."
Morgan Scott (3-3) came on in relief in the sixth inning and struck out three of the first six batters she faced and the game when into extra innings tied at 1-1. Stanford manufactured a couple of runs in the eighth to take a 3-1 lead and held on to win the first game of the series.
Noteworthy: With two hits on Friday, Bunker became just the third Duck to reach 250 career hits. She extended her hitting streak to six games … In addition to the second inning double play, the Ducks had three runners thrown out trying to steal second base … McGowan's seven-game hitting streak came to an end.

Quotable
Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi on Allee Bunker
"I love what Allee is doing. Every game she shows up and she gets after it. You can see as a fifth-year senior she wants to make sure she finishes things the right way and on her terms, and you can see that's what she's doing. She's playing free, I love her approach at the plate; she's always really good on defense."
2B Allee Bunker on playing at home after 25 games
"Super fun. We love playing at home. It is really nice and comfortable being out on the field. I love hearing the Jane rumble when we are doing something good and it just kind of fires us up in those big moments that we need to propel us to a win."
On Deck: The series with Stanford continues Saturday at 2 p.m. at Jane Sanders Stadium (Pac-12 Network).
