Ducks' Comeback Comes Up Short
03/17/23 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon lacrosse team continuously fought Friday night at Papé Field but could not finish its comeback efforts against California, losing by a final score of 13-12.
The Ducks (3-3) found themselves trailing early and, despite tying up the game on three separate occasions, were unable to grab a lead throughout the game.
Proud of her team's effort, head coach Chelsea Hoffmann stressed the importance of learning and moving forward from the contest. "Our conference is unique where we play everybody twice," said Hoffmann. "The opportunity to play Cal again, we are going to let this go, learn from it and allow it to fire us up. Statistics might be what they are, but it's about being able to bounce back, have the integrity to bounce back to play the game and respect our opponents."
How it Happened: California (3-5) got off to a fast start with three goals just over three minutes before Morgan McCarthy responded with Oregon's first goal. That opener in scoring led to two more goals by Lauren Rismani and Gabby Cleveland to even the contest at 3-3. Cal would reclaim the lead with two more goals, including the final goal of the first period with one second remaining.
Oregon continued to show its resiliency in the game by knotting things up again, this time making the score 5-5. Alyssa Wright was involved in both of the Ducks' opening goals in the second, scoring her first while adding her second assist on Cleveland's second shot to find the back of the net. The Golden Bears would score four of the following five goals in the game before a late surge by Oregon in the final three minutes would even the game, 9-9, going into the half.
The Ducks could not capitalize on their momentum, allowing four goals in the third quarter. Goals from freshman Anna Simmons and Cleveland made it a two-goal game with 15 minutes remaining.
Sophomore Paige Crowther made a valiant effort in relief between the pipes, making four saves in the third quarter and finishing Friday with a .583 save percentage in just over 36 minutes of action.
Despite Oregon outshooting Cal 7-4 and recording its second shutout quarter of the season in the fourth, the Ducks were unable to force overtime, with Wright's third goal being the only tally of the quarter.

Who Stood Out: Wright paced the Oregon attack with a career-high five points, matching bests with three goals and two assists. Lauren Rismani continued orchestrating the offense after her fifth multi-assist game of the season. The sophomore attacker extends her multiple-point streak to six games.
Notable: McCarthy extended her goal-scoring streak to 17 games with her first-quarter goal on Friday … Wright became the sixth Duck this season to record a hat trick and the third with five-or-more points in a game.
Up Next: Oregon continues the opening weekend of conference play on Sunday against No. 21 Stanford (12 p.m. PT, Oregon Live Stream 3).
