Ducks Take Down Buffs
03/17/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – In its Pac-12 home opener, the No. 47 Oregon women's tennis team took down Colorado, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
Playing their first match in 12 days, the Ducks (9-4, 2-1) picked up their second conference win after splitting two road matches at No. 43 Arizona and No. 25 Arizona State to begin their Pac-12 slate. UO clinched the doubles point before straight-set singles wins from Jo-Yee Chan, Ares Teixido Garcia and Myah Petchey delivered the Ducks' first sweep in conference action.
"Last weekend was the first weekend (our team) had off since we started the season, so I think it was just a good reset for a lot of them especially since we approach finals week," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "I think they really benefited from that, and they came out fresh and ready to go. We put in a lot of work for the doubles courts, as well, and we did different things to work on movement so that we were fit and strong."

In doubles, Petchey and Karin Young made quick work on court three, overtaking CU's Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac 6-0. Petchey and Young evened their spring doubles record to 2-2 while picking up their first conference win. The doubles point was decided by two tightly contested matches at Nos. 1 and 2.
The Ducks' No. 2 pair of Chan and Teixido Garcia were bested by Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura, 6-4. The loss was Chan and Teixido Garcia's first this spring when paired together, snapping a nine-match winning streak to begin the season.
Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral, playing at No. 1 for the 13th straight match, sealed the doubles point and handed UO a 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win over the Buffaloes' Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed.
Luescher and Martinez Moral pushed their doubles mark to 7-4 and 2-1 in Pac-12 action.
Chan claimed her eighth straight singles win and tallied UO's second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. The freshman is 9-1 in her first collegiate campaign, with five wins at No. 5 and four at the sixth spot.
Teixido Garcia cruised on court two, 6-3, 6-2, defeating Ventura for the Ducks' third point. She improved her spring record to 8-4, with six of her singles victories coming from the second position.
Petchey clinched the 4-0 victory with her 6-1, 6-4 win on court three. Petchey triumphed over Stanojevic and tallied her first singles win of the spring season.
"I am so proud of the way she's been consistently competing better and better and to see her get the clinch today was awesome," Nagle said of Petchey. "I was so glad to see her have that opportunity and she is playing better and better and I am excited for her and what's to come."

Three singles matches went unfinished. Martinez Moral took the first set from El Sayed, 6-4, while the two were level at 5-5 in the second set.
Young rebounded from a 6-3 first-set loss to take the second set, 6-1. The match was complete before Young and Tokac could begin the decisive third set. Luescher, playing at No. 1, held a 3-2 lead in the second set after Balzert narrowly took the first, 7-5.
"It was great to bounce back, they both kind of had situations in the first set that had they capitalized and had gone their way, it could have been in their favor," Nagle added. "So being able to bounce back like that is huge and shows a lot of their resiliency. I was really happy Karin was able to get that second set.
"I think Sophie's energy and competitiveness was really high. I was confident that she would have also found a way to come back there. "
The Ducks conclude their home-opening Pac-12 weekend against No. 50 Utah on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
