Ducks hit parade ties series at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. – Gavin Grant highlighted an Oregon season-high 17 hit-attack with an eighth-inning grand slam to give the Ducks a 14-8 win over Washington State at Bailey-Brayton Field on Saturday.
The win snapped a four-game skid for the Ducks (10-7, 2-3 Pac-12) and tied the series 1-1 heading into Sunday's series finale.
How It Happened: Washington State (14-4, 3-2 Pac-12) built on Friday's momentum early building a 5-2 lead after three innings. The Cougars scored four in the second off Oregon starter Leo Uelmen, before Oregon answered with a pair of runs of its own in the third.
Sabin Ceballos got the Ducks on the board with a one-out RBI double scoring Colby Shade from second while moving Drew Cowley to third. Tanner Smith made it a two-run game with a sacrifice fly that scored Cowley.
After WSU added a run in the bottom half of the third, Oregon responded with its first of two five-run innings on the day to take its first lead of the series.
The Ducks loaded the bases to start the inning on a Bennett Thompson walk and back-to-back hits by Carter Garate and Grant. Rikuu Nishida followed with a two-strike, two-run single over the shortstops head to cut the lead to a run.
The Ducks tied it on a Shade sacrifice bunt that WSU through into right field for its first error of the day, allowing Shade to move to second and Nishida to third. One batter later, Smith lined a double off the left-field wall to score Nishida and Shade and give the Ducks their first lead of the series, 7-5.
WSU plated a pair in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, but Oregon answered with the next seven runs to break the game open.
In the top of the sixth, Cowley and Ceballos drew one-out walks before Smith loaded the bases with a single. Jacob Walsh drew a bases loaded base on balls, one of three walks for the Ducks' first baseman in the game, to give Oregon the lead back. Thompson made it a two-run game with a sacrifice fly scoring Ceballos.
The Ducks broke it open in the eighth with their second five-run inning of the game capped by Grant's first career grand slam. Smith led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a Walsh walk and to third on a throwing error on an attempted Bennett Thompson sacrifice bunt. Garate drove in a run with a walk before Grant made the Cougars pay crushing a ball over the left-field wall.
Grayson Grinsell (1-0) picked up his first career win for the Ducks. The freshman from Reno, Nev., entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with the scored tied at seven. The lefty proceeded to toss three scoreless innings allowing just one hit while matching a career high with four strikeouts.
Grinsell retired eight of the first 10 batters he faced and had his outing come to end after he gave up a double into the right-field corner that ended the inning when WSU's runner tried to score from first but was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay play from Nishida to Grant to Thompson.
