Eight Top-Five Finishes, Two Wins at SDSU
03/25/23 | Track and Field
Jadyn Mays (100m), Aaliyah McCormick (100H) turned in winning efforts Saturday afternoon.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon track and field team totaled eight top-five finishes including two wins and a top-10 program effort Saturday at the 44th Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
Freshman Aaliyah McCormick recorded the Ducks' first win of the afternoon, stopping the clock in 13.23 (-1.1 m/s) to take the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles. In addition to the victory, McCormick moved to sixth on the program's top-10 list despite the headwind. The San Diego native finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles (8.01) two weeks ago in Albuquerque.
Jadyn Mays, fifth in the 60 and 200 at NCAA Indoors, got her outdoor season started with a victory in the women's 100 meters. She crossed the finish in 11.19, just off her wind-legal PB of 11.16 from the Desert Heat Classic last season. With her performance, Mays improved upon her opener of 11.35 from last year at the same meet.
In the Ducks' first event on the track, the UO men posted a runner-up showing in the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet of Ryan Mulholland, Micah Williams, Xavier Nairne and PJ Ize-Iyamu Jr. combined for a time of 39.72, good for second overall.
Ize-Iyamu and Nairne were back on the track a couple hours later for top-five finishes in the men's 100 meters. Ize-Iyamu clocked a time of 10.49 to win section two and finish third overall. Nairne followed closely with a slightly wind-aided time of 10.51 (+2.3 m/s) for a fourth-place outing.
Combined events standout Jett Kinder finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of 64.40m/211-3, a new lifetime best. He got the implement out over 60 meters in four of six attempts including his day's best in the sixth round. Prior to Saturday, Kinder's best in event (63.95m/209-10) had stood since the 2021 Pac-12 Championships.
In an early field result, freshman Hunter Angove had a lifetime-best clearance of 5.05m/16-6.75 on the way to a sixth-place finish in the pole vault. The Bandon, Ore., native began the day with a best of 4.95 meters (16-2.75) from last weekend's Oregon Preview.
Notable: Camden Wheeler ran a collegiate PB of 47.70 to finish eighth in the men's 400 meters…in the women's shot put, Colleen Uzoekwe (14.30m/46-11) added more than two feet to her outdoor PB from last year's Bryan Clay Invitational…Ella Clayton was eighth in the women's 200 meters in 23.51, just off her PB of 23.48 from this meet last year.
Up Next: The Ducks' distance and throws groups take on the Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1) in Palo Alto. Both days of the meet will be streamed live by FloTrack.
