04/11/23 | Track and Field
Jorinde van Klinken posted the No. 2 throw in the world (discus) with her 67.05m/219-11 at the Triton Invitational.
EUGENE, Ore. – For the second time this year, Jorinde van Klinken is the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week as announced Tuesday morning. The two-time NCAA champion in the discus posted an NCAA-leading and school-record measure of 67.05m/219-11 in her season debut at the Triton Invitational.
Van Klinken was also part of Tuesday's Pac-12 weekly honors release as the women's field athlete of the week. It's the fourth conference selection of her career, and first as a Duck.
In addition to the collegiate lead, van Klinken established the No. 2 throw in the world this year and the No. 3 performance in NCAA history with last Friday's performance. Overall, her series had three throws beyond 65 meters, all of which rank inside the top 10 in collegiate history.
Van Klinken finished second at the Triton Invitational just behind Olympic champion Valarie Allman and ahead of 2019 world champion Yaime Perez Tellez of Spain.
This marks the fifth time the UO women have been recognized as National Athlete of the Week during outdoor competition, and the first time since 2017. On that exclusive list, Van Klinken joins former UO standouts Jenna Prandini, Raevyn Rogers, Deajah Stevens and the 2017 relays crew.
Van Klinken was previously honored this past February after setting the indoor collegiate record in the shot put.
The Women of Oregon added a third NCAA leader the following day with Jaida Ross in the shot put. The Medford, Ore., native posted a lifetime best of 18.49m/60-8 while extending her own school record. In the 1500 meters, Izzy Thornton-Bott ran a collegiate-leading 4:08.64 at the Australian Championships at the end of March.
The Ducks are off to Southern California this week for the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa. Taylor Chocek gets things started Wednesday morning at Mt. SAC with day one of the heptathlon.
