Ducks, Avrit Finish Second at Pasatiempo
04/12/23 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Led by Owen Avrit's individual runner-up showing, No. 22 Oregon finished second Wednesday following the final round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
No. 9 Pepperdine led by 14 strokes going into the final round and the Ducks closed to with six midway through the final round, but the Waves' lead was too big to overcome. Pepperdine won the event at 16-under 1,034, with the Ducks nine shots off the pace at 9-under 1,043.
California took third at even par, followed by No. 7 Stanford at plus-18 and No. 23 Colorado State and BYU tied for fifth at 19-over.
How It Happened: Four Ducks finished in the top 20 as Oregon had the best showing of the six Pac-12 clubs in competition.
Avrit shot a final round 73 and was at 6-under 204 for the tournament. He finished a stroke behind 2023 champion Derek Hitchner of Pepperdine.
Greg Solhaug posted a final-round 69 to tie for sixth at 2-under 208. It was the best finish of the season for Solhaug.
Greyson Leach led Oregon with a 68 on Wednesday and tied for 16th at 211. Nate Stember was as shot back in 18th at 212. Leach had one of the more adventurous final rounds. He opened with four straight birdies but gave all four shots back with bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8 and a double bogey on No. 6.
He then went on another run making birdies at No. 9 and No. 10, as well as on No. 14 and No. 15. Leach bogeyed 18 to reach his final total at 2-under. His 68 was the lowest round of the day as Leach was one of just six golfers to finish under par on Wednesday.
"The guys grinded," said coach Casey Martin. "It was not easy with the wind and brutal greens."

Head Coach Casey Martin
"I feel good about where we are as a team. We're excited for Pac 12's."
Notable: This was Avrit's fifth top-five finish of the season. Oregon has counted all 26 of Avrit's rounds this season … Solhaug's previous best finish this season was a tie for 12th. He has now finished in the top 20 of six of his last seven tournaments … The Western Intercollegiate is a play six, count five format like the Ducks will see at the Pac-12 Championships at the end of the month.
