Grit, Versatility Push the Ducks Past Arizona State
04/14/23 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon again found itself in a daunting deficit, down 6-0 with 10:56 to play in the second half. However, the Sun Devil lead proved insufficient as the Ducks secured their fifth win and first in conference play, 12-11.
The Ducks (5-7, 1-5 Pac-12) found themselves in early holes in the first half in both shots, 14-11, and in draw controls, 9-3. Critical second-half efforts from senior Alyssa Wright and juniors Madysyn Sweeney and Haley Cummins gave Oregon a much-needed lift in its comeback effort.
"Belief and a lot of people stepped up," summarized the Ducks' come-from-behind win for head Coach Chelsea Hoffmann. "They were all ready to change from how we started. They had a lot of conversations that were productive," said Hoffmann. Hoffmann made the team's outlook clear heading into the final games of the season, "It shows that we have grit. We've got resiliency, and we know can come from behind, as seen in multiple games. They know they have that in them, and it is exciting going into a new and challenging opponent in USC on Sunday."

How it Happened: Oregon was at the mercy of Arizona State (4-9, 3-5 Pac-12) for the majority of the first half. The Ducks were held scoreless for almost 25:00 minutes of play behind multiple goals from the Sun Devils' Teagan Ng and Berit Brookfield.
Junior McCarthy carried the offensive load in the first half for Oregon, scoring a hat trick in a five-minute span to make the Arizona State lead 7-3 before the end of the half.

Oregon looked inward for answers coming out of the break, and several players answered the call. Junior Haley Cummins commanded the draw circle in the second half for the Ducks, pacing Oregon with six draw controls on the day and a 10-5 advantage in the category in the second half. From there, Oregon scored four of the next five with contributions from Sweeney, McCarthy and Gabby Cleveland (two) to cut the Sun Devil lead to one.
Arizona State grew its lead back to three, but not for long, as Riley Taylor and Katie Collins made it a 10-9 game with a pivotal final 15 minutes of play remaining.
The Sun Devils struck first in the fourth period, but that momentum would not last. Wright scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season 37 seconds apart to even the contest at 11 goals apiece.
After just over seven minutes of scoreless back-and-forth play, the combo of Sweeney and Wright teamed up to give Oregon its first lead, 12-11; the only lead the Ducks would need Friday evening.

Who Stood Out: Maggie Flynn recorded three caused turnovers in consecutive games, giving her 10 in her career with multiple. Margot Hotham added team-highs in ground balls and caused turnovers with, four in each category. The four caused turnovers are a career-high and the most by a Duck in a game this season. Lauren Rismani had her third game of the season with three assists to extend her team lead to 18.
Notable: McCarthy scored four goals in consecutive games for the first time in her career and extended her goal-scoring streak to 23 games … Cummins' six draw controls matched a team-best for a single game this season ... Friday's game against ASU was the third game of the season causing 10 or more turnovers.
Up Next: Oregon plays its home finale at Papé Field on Sunday, April 16, against No. 20 USC (12:00 p.m. PST).
