Sunday Shutout Gives Ducks Sweep of ASU
04/16/23 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Stevie Hansen and Morgan Scott combined on a four-hit shutout and Tehya Bird and Alyssa Daniell each had two RBI as No. 19 Oregon completed a sweep of Arizona State with a 4-0 win Sunday in front of 1,700 at Farrington Stadium.
Â
It was the Ducks' first sweep in Tempe since 2016.
Â
"The pitchers worked ahead they changed speeds," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "I thought they really executed the game plan.
I love how Stevie gave us five innings of work and then passed the ball to Morgan who came in and got the save."
Â
How it Happened: Oregon (28-11, 8-7) scored one run each in four different innings.
Â
In the second, Daniell drew a lead-off walk and moved around to third on a couple of ground outs. Bird then singled off the third base bag to bring Daniell home with the first run of the game.
Â
"Any time we can turn the lineup over and on top of that push runs through, the bottom of the lineup was really big today," said Lombardi.
Â
Kai Luschar had a one-out single in the third – her second hit of the game – and advanced to third on consecutive wild pitches. One out later, Daniell lined a single to the right side to score Luschar.
Â
Bird came through with another two out RBI in the fifth inning. After Ariel Carlson reached on a fielder's choice and KK Humphreys walked, both runners moved up a wild pitch. Bird then lined a shot up the middle that was smothered by the shortstop but there was no play and Bird's single scored Carlson from third for a 3-0 lead.
Â
"It feels really good because I've been struggling at the plate a little bit and it feels good to come through for my team," said Bird, who was 3-for-3 on Sunday. "I'm always trying to put the ball in play, but I think it's different when I know I have runners in scoring position. It's even more important to put the ball in play and make the defense make plays."
Â
Daniell capped the scoring with a home run in the seventh inning, her second of the series and seventh on the year.
Â
"I really loved watching Alyssa play all weekend," said Lombardi. "She was clutch for us. That last home run that she hit today – we needed that."
Â
That was more than enough for Hansen, who gave up just three hits in five innings to improve to 16-4 on the season.
Â
ASU (21-16, 6-10) got two runners on in the second after an error and a walk, but Hansen struck out Savannah Price to end the threat.
Â
ASU also had two runners on in the fourth but Hansen got Kayla Lissy to pop out to center field to end the inning.
Â
Scott relieved in the sixth and gave up a leadoff double, but she stranded the runner at third following a ground out, a strikeout and a pop-up. Scott struck out two in earning her fifth save of the season.
Â
Noteworthy: Daniell had an RBI in all three games of the series and it was her fourth straight game with an RBI overall … This is Oregon's second winning streak of six or more games in 2023. Overall, this was Oregon's first sweep of ASU since a series in Eugene in 2017.
